THE LONG AND SHORT

Who it works for: Oval shaped faces look terrific with this style. It adds amazing body and life to fine, straight hair. For waves, it has a rocker vibe

Tell your hairstylist: Keep layers long in back and choppy all around. This cut is all about movement. Add heavy, uneven bangs. They can be tucked behind ears or left in front of face.

I, too, have this problem, and kept my hair long for a long time. Then a few months ago, I took the big step and got it cut short - fairly short on top so I can spike it with gel, and it looks good messed up. I guess I lucked out with a stylist who knew what to do. Another alternative is getting a "wavy" perm. The trick is to get a cut in layers, so it at least looks and feels like there's more hair. Honestly, it's trial and error, but trust a professional and go for something different!

That really depends on the shape of your face, and you didn't mention if you are male or female.
If you are female, a blunt cut will work the best. But, it needs to be done right. And, you will still need to have it cut to compliment the shape of your face.
If you are male, it can be somewhat simpler.
My advice to you is check around, and find a salon with a stylist who specializes in your type of hair.
I have the same type of hair. When I moved to a new town, I paid attention to peoples hair around me, in the stores, etc. When I saw someone who had my hair type, I just politely asked them where they had it cut. By doing so, I found an excellent stylist without much research.
As you know, with your type of hair, a bad haircut really, really, shows, and seems to take forever to grow back.
So check around. If you live in a large city, stop in at the beauty college, and talk to an instructor. You don't have to let them cut your hair, but you can easily benifit by their knowledge.
Take your time, and check around. You will find the stylist and cut that will suit your hair.
Good luck to you.

What about a chinese bob cut? It's always in style and looks really cute on thin hair.
