You must install the driver before you connect the camcorder to the computer the first time. Download the correct driver for you camcorder from the sony site. Hopefully if you do so you can still connect without having to go through major uninstall hardware hassles. You also need the latest version of DirectX (V9.0C)
I think that even after you install the correct driver XP will still run the "new hardware wizard" when you connect. If it does so then do not let it find the correct driver. Point it to the directory "c:\windows\inf". This will force it to look were the driver is already installed instead for finding some other driver and associating that driver with your hardware.
When you connect to the i-link port on your computer make sure that the camcorder is on. Do not turn on the camcorder after you connect. This sometimes causes the camcorder to be misidentified.
You will need to install DirectX first, reboot, then the Sony driver/software, reboot, then connect your camcorder.

the thing is you know, windows xp comes with all drivers of all companies products,
but in your case, it might be because of three reasons,
1. while installing windows XP, it asks for complete or custom installation, in complete installation, you'll have all drivers, and in custom installation no drivers are copied into the computer, then you'll get a message like new hardware not recognized. in this case you have to add the additional features of windows xp using the CD.
2. your camcorder is having a bad or damaged memory device in it, in that case, you have to replace your memory card in the camcorder.
3. this is very common and this might be the same case with you, when you connect your camcorder or camera or any external device, you should not remove it directly. if you remove it directly, then these devices will not be recognized by the computer after wards. what you have to do is, in the right hand side bottom corner, next to the time display, there will be icon saying "safe to remove" you have to click on it and click close.
in this case what you have to do is, try to download the latest drivers for your camcorder from Internet or install the CD which is given along with your device.
i hope i helped you, if you want more information, mail me.
all the best
