It is just a habit that forms when you are young and insecure about how you sound. You dont want to sound "geeky" by using correct language. It is just one misconception that kids have when they are young that the word "like" makes them sound "cool". Then, when they get into college they cant stop because they formed a speech "habit". So, it takes them a while in their twenties or thirties to stop. Depends what kind of job they get - on when they will be able to stop talking like that. The more professional, the quicker they will be able to stop.

It is annoying. I'm an American living in Europe, and unfortunately due to the many of 20 something American backpackers that visit here in the summer, most Europeans think that's how all Americans speak.

Its a bad habit, instead of pausing or substituting a word of substance they feel they constantly have to have every moment of the conversation filled

- watch one reality show
- read one article on Decaprio
- not crack up when someone tells me Brittney Spears is a "singer."

Well that's a stero type and I myself am 24 and I particularly don't use those words to formulate my opinions nor thoughts!

it's like instead of taking a breath, or admit they cant think of what they meant we say like. its how we've grown up. its an articulation. when the valley-like girls say like its def. just a bad habit. I am one of them...

It is irritating, isn't it? You have to delete all the 'like' words to decipher the code.

Same as saying 'um' and 'ah'. We hear from others so we sorta naturally pick up on it.
