the "Render unto God" quote is incomplete... it says Render unto God what is God's and Render unto Caesar what is Caesars... and that was a response to someone asking Jesus why they should pay taxes to Rome. Nowhere in this story does Jesus say give God your money. Actually before that quote, he has the person look at his coins and identify that the currency has Caesar's image on it...and then says the "Render" quote....so he's saying quite the opposite.
Even the concept of the "tithe" or giving 10% wasn't tied to money either. You were to give the first fruits of you labor, whatever that was... The fruits of their labor would have been goods and food and livestock that could have been used to provide for the Priests (who weren't paid for the job) and for the needy.... The first fruits of our labor is money, but it is used for the same purposes.
What God wants is a full time everyday relationship with each of us. Not just an hour a week.

God wants your heart and your love, he does neither need nor want your money!
Churches however need money and there is nothing wrong with that. Here's what Paul writes about this subject:
1Corinthians 9,
13 Do you not know that those who minister the holy things eat of the things of the temple, and those who serve at the altar partake of the offerings of the altar?
14 Even so the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel.
Even during Old Testament times, the tribe of the Levites (the priests) lived from the tithes and offerings of the other 11tribes.
Using the Gospel to become rich, is an entirely different matter though. This passage is a warning to all Christians, with a desire to become rich:
1Timothy 6,
3 If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness,
4 he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions,
5 useless wranglings[a] of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself.[b]
6 Now godliness with contentment is great gain.
7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain[c] we can carry nothing out.
8 And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content.
9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.
10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
The Good Confession
As for your time, I assume that by an hour per week you are referring to the hour spent in church.
Sorry but an hour spent in church is not necessarily time given to God.
If you want to spend time with God, read the Bible and pray. Churches are places where we go to worship God and where we learn more about him.
Anyway, this was probably not a serious question and I have a feeling you are going to pick the person that says "yeah God is a greedy bas****" or something similar as best answer but I gave you a proper answer all the same, just in case you really wanted to know.

God never asks for our money. This is such a common misconception. God asks for everything! All that is us. Out mind, body and spirit. Everything we are should be rendered unto God. Tithing is a way for us to help the growth of the Church and to thank God for all he has done for us. I don't think 10% is too much to ask for the creator of the universe.

He doesn't want or need your money, worldly preachers do.
What God Requires of Us.
John 17:3 This means everlasting life their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God and of the one you sent forth Jesus Christ.
Read your bible= that's required
Obedience to his laws= Thats required, don't lie, steal, commit adultry, honor your parents meant to support them. Take care of them. They didn't have social security or medicare.
He said give to ceasar what is ceasars or the Government
The governments picture was on the coin. In other words pay your taxes. Give to God what is God's meaning Worship
Don't worship and blindly follow whatever your government says.
Remember Hitler? All leaders of countries are not gods.
Would it hurt you to have a bible study one hour a week?
So you can see what he has done for others?

When I wasn't working I honored God with my time, my skills, and my talents. God was faithful to me, provided me with all the things that I needed and then some. Now that I am working and don't have as much time, I honor Him with my tithes, my skills and talents. He is still faithful. He doesn't need your money, it is a sacrifice and act of obedience.

I wonder what god would spend the money on? I mean what would a God shopping spree entail? Does he start off with an orange frappuccino from the nearest Orange Julius stand and take it from there?

Actually, God wants all of those things. He wants people to give their money so the church and the poor can be taken care of. He also wants us to give of our time to help other people out. He wants us to give of our talents so that He can be further glorified. He wants us to give our lives back to Him so that we can have eternal life. He wants to be involved and for us to be willing to give Him every part of our being.

Everything is God's. God wants you to offer money to show that you are humble and that he is first in your life.

God wants your love, money and your inability to ask logical questions. I believe that is official christian doctrine.

It all belongs to God, so we're to give it all up. We should use all our money in a way that glorifies Him, spend all our time in a way that glorifies Him, etc.
