Everyone has the right to believe what they want. Is it really necessary to call people stupid and blind for having a faith. Having something to believe in helps alot of people through tough times. Give it a rest people.

I agree with you 100%. Some people just feel better to voice their opinions in a negative manner. I believe that ones beliefs are their own and they should not be judged for them. Hopefully one day they will understand that because we all know that if we bashed their beliefs or lack there of they would become negative to us as well.

First, in response to Zombie's answer, if you had read the original question closely, you would have realized that the asker did not claim to adhere to a particular faith at all. So it was a little unfair to tell her to "condemn your fellow Christians".

In response to the original question, the naive part of me wants to say yes, let's show a little more respect towards each other in terms of religion. However, the realistic side of me knows that people will always feel strongly about their beliefs and philosophies, whether that is atheism, christianity, or any other faith. I would just hope that people would have the maturity to treat each other with respect despite these differences.

you've put it quite well - simple but true. however, sometimes no matter how simply you put the fact that everyone is entitled to an opinion, some people just don't get it......

i for one always try to keep an open mind. i don't believe, but i might be wrong so i don't go out of my way to deride people who *do* believe. it really annoys me when people ask a question either related to religion, or about a religious or secular group, and others answer with hateful junk that proves their worthlessness as human beings

very few people seem to understand that they are not automatically right in whatever assumptions they make, and fewer still can control themselves when faced with an opposing (or even just different) opinion. it's a shame, really........

Usually people who bash religous beliefs or are hateful toward it are a) people who try to make themselves appear more intelligent by demeaning others, b) struggling with their own spirituality and take on a defensive attitude, c) just completely "evil" and mean and want stir something up, or d) just ignorant and their own ignorance is second only to their arrogance. I have my beliefs, but over the years I have discovered holes in them as they were taught to me. I think the foundation of religion is pretty much the same until you get into nothing less than cults. I think most of the differences come with the more trivial matters and that causes a majority of the confusion. Remember God is not the author of confusion, so when religion becomes confusion, it is not of God...it is manmade. As far as the person who referred to the "religious" distress in wars and all over the world...what makes you think that this is sanctioned by God? Just because people claim to be fighting in the name of God, does not mean they are doing God's service. They just try to justify it by using God's name. I am not a Bible thumper or radical, but some things are just common sense when a person takes the time to think about them.

You said: "Having something to believe in helps alot of people through tough times."

And that is the definition of a "crutch," which is what a lot of the atheistic-leaning people on here argue against, and they have every bit as much of a right to those [non-]beliefs as Christians have to theirs.

Condemn your fellow Christians also, and maybe you have a small point. As it is, you're engaged in the same behavior you're complaining about, not to mention your type of question is posted hundreds of times per day.

Whatever it takes to drive home the message that they are worshipping a HARMFUL fantasy... so be it. I don't think any atheists have a problem with people believing in fairy tales. If that was all there was to it, you wouldn't hear from us.

But when you attempt to impose your fairy tales on us, via political lobbying, putting people like Bush in office, for example, holding back medical research, backing insane countries like Israel, putting us at odds with other religious nutjobs like the president of Iran, etc...

This is why we have a problem with your religion. This is why we come after you. Because if someone doesn't educate you people, your ignorance is going to destroy us all.

Make sense? Probably not. But if we can get you to wake up from the dream you've been living in, it will.

When a non-believer posts pointed "questions" that are meant to cast doubt on belief (like, "Why do you feel the need to believe in god?"), he (or she) generally believes he's doing the believers a favor by exposing them to a different point of view.

Of course, that works the other way, too -- there are plenty of believers around here who post pointed "questions" to non-believers (like, "What do you think happens when you die? / Wouldn't you rather be sure you were going to go to heaven?"), and, again, he (or she) generally believes he's doing the non-believer a service of some kind.

I suppose the existence of a service like Yahoo Answers is bound to draw out this sort of debate. And IMHO, I don't see how either side is representing themselves very well in the course of things.

Oh well, just my $0.02. :-)

My opinion? Some levels of the following:

Insecurity
Lack of exposure
Bad experience
Stereotypes
Different culture
Misunderstanding

Incredibly ironic as it is, these same issues or conditions exist, fester, and drive the hateful speech & actions spurred on by some leaders or those that represent a faith or nation as well. That grass grows on both sides of the fence.

if you ask a question in this forum you have to expect responses from a wide spectrum of people. There are atheists here who think faith is blind and stupid-- just as there are christians (and others) who think that atheism is arrogant and hateful.

I agree the only thing we can do is pray for them. every since i have been reading some of these answers to the questions i've found that there are a lot of people who do not believe but that is their choice. i for one do believe and i have asked a couple of questions and i got some really nasty responses and some people thought i was asking amiss but really i was just asking to see what people thought.
what i don't understand is why atheist are responding to a religious section ...someone please explain. just leave this section to the believers because it sounds like your trying to get us to not believe the same way you say we are trying to get you to believe.
