Probably because Christians don't go around bragging about their efforts to help the poor.
Matthew 6:1 "Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. 2 "Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

I know that my church here does more to help out people with food and utilities than Catholic Charities and Salvation Army combined. Between the three, and a few Baptist churches helping here and there, we manage to get quite a bit done in our city. I know, because I help out with the community services. I actually go to the store and purchase $150 - $200 worth of groceries at a time for people. I actually go and pay these people's utility bills for them. I go and visit with them and take them blankets and other things that they need. I even babysit for them while they go on job interviews and the like.
My whole church has something called ADRA. The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) International is an independent humanitarian agency established in 1984 by the Seventh-day Adventist Church for the specific purposes of individual and community development and disaster relief. Working in more than 120 countries, ADRA is one of the more efficient relief agencies operating in the world, keeping its administrative costs to about 10 percent while benefiting more than 24 million people annually. It is comparable to The Red Cross and to The Salvation Army.
ADRA's development and relief work covers five core activities: Food Security, Economic Development, Primary Health, Disaster Preparedness and Response, and Basic Education.
We may not be able to have a huge effect on reducing the poverty level in the world, as we are actually a small church compared to the Baptists, Catholics, etc. But we are doing above and beyond our part.

When we undertook the creation of a marketing strategy for a series to be called "Christianity Is Good For You," we encountered much the same problem.
Our focus groups were into the Mel Gibson take re Jesus - torture, blood & gore, pain, and anti-hereos (Jews & marginally Romans). They could (limitedly) even do the "faith" thing - as long as it didn't require sitting for too long or reciting prayers with more than 80 words.
But when it came to the " ...what you do to these, you do to me .." type of Jesus message, there was less-than zero response.
When questioned on this, some typical responses were:
"No, it's not the acts .. it's the faith in Jesus that matters."
"No, the rich man and eye of the needle comparison is not meant to be taken literally .. anyway, that needle thing is just an address in Haifa, or something like that .."
"Yo .. wassup with dat! MY bling is MY bling!"

Unfortunately, modern Christians don't give as much as we should. The conservatives among us are too concern about the gay marriages in Massachusetts to worry about the 15 year-old hooker that's getting abused next door by her pimp. They're more worried about if she's going to abort that baby, and care less about whether or not she is able to financially support the baby. It's a screwy thing modern Christianity, people have their morals screwed up.

I think all established religions are having trouble holding nowadays. People are more prone to de interested in anything estotheric rather than in rigid rules they have to follow in order to be saved from eternal damnation. People are just not scared enough anymore... Less and less people are buying into the idea of a vindictive and cruel God that put us here to follow some sets of rules or eternally burn in hell...
