I have to go with the lottery. At least there is an astronomically small chance they might get something out of it. The other two will get you nothing but misery and an even emptier pocket.

Depends on where they live, if they live in an area that gets very cold at night, they might want to spend money on alcohol, because that will help them survive cold nights. If they live in a warm area, the lottery is probably a better idea, because they can get nourishment at a shelter. A church is useless, unless they give him money or something beneficial.

No, of these three options, I think the best is subjective and depends on each individual poor person. The lottery gives them some hope that they may win a fortune and escape their condition, but ultimately, when they don't, which is most probably the case, they'll get even more depressed about being poor. So that's an unfavorable option.
Alas, the second option, booze, is an excellent one to many poor people, as is evidenced by the frequency of alcohol consumptions by people with hardly any money. It offers an escape route of pleasureable ignorance that allows them to at least temporarily leave their condition. Yes, when they get back, they'll get sad, but that's what more booze is for! Thus, you can see the essentially narcotic qualities of the drink that surpass any similar qualities of the lottery tickets.
Giving their money to church may offer them some spiritual comfort that lasts a long time, but it's really only effective for a few of the more determined people. It is truly beneficial and may garner support from unpoor people.
Frankly, I must say that a fourth option is the most suitable, and that is to smartly save the money and use it to start a business or something of that sort, but you didn't offfer that option. I must conclude by saying alcohol is the best option, but the others are just as good.

True true. Yet I also believe that if you give a homeless person a little money and they choose to go buy booze, let them. Here we are sitting on our computers, in airconditioning - possibly watching tv (me-at work). I say you never know until you walk in someone's shoes how they feel. You don't know why that man is standing on the corner dirty, sad and hungry. Ever feel depressed before and maybe lay down in your bed and cry? I have. They don't have a bed to cry on. Talk about depression, huh? I can go to my fridge and grab a beer if I want. They can't. I think ALL people deserve a little happiness in their lives and if a person who has NOTHING just wants a beer, who are we to say "no -- you are poor and therefore, you have no right to enjoy anything --- ON TOP OF YOUR LIFE SUCKING." I agree with the lottery theory too though but then again, they may be throwing that away too.

Your statement is not true.

I am a Christian, and I have put God to the test. He requires me to give back to Him a small 10% of my income plus offerings of what I can afford. He has fulfilled His promises to me. I have all that I need. My family is content and we have all our needs met. We might not always have the money to go to the store and buy a new TV - but God provided a home for us for $1000 just when income tax came in. We have found money in places where we know that there was no money - such as in the glovebox of the car and in my backpack. The bills are always paid. There is always enough money for food and clothes and doctor's visits. There is even money left over for camping and the like when there shouldn't be.

I have my PhD and we could be making quite a bit of money. But I followed God's plan for my life, and I promise you, I am a lot happier.

I challenge you, Sexual Chocolate, to do what God says in His Word and then say - truthfully - that people are better off throwing their money away on church.

In many states you can lose your lottery winning if you are on public assistance. Because you're not using your own money to buy the ticket it's the states money so the state gets the winnings. Others just make pay back all the public assistance that you received depending on how much you won.

They might try not throwing it away at all.

One of those I've never spent a penny on in my life.
One of those I haven't spent a penny on in a good ten to fifteen years.
One of those I haven't spent a penny on since January (except on my wedding anniversary).

I prefer spending my money on the people I love.

if you are christian, i suggest you put it in a church. but I'm Muslim and would rather put it in donations to a masjid or for poor kids in Africa. besides, if you donate money, God will give it back to you, if not in this life, in the hereafter

It depends. If you put your faith in LUCK, then go buy the lottery. If you have faith in God, then go to church.
