I'd like to have a little more freedom to do things like cuss every once in awhile, tell a few lies or maybe oogle my neighbor's wife and stuff like that. I can easily afford it. I'm also looking for an opportunity to cheat on my taxes next year without feeling guilty. What do you think? Is 20% enough?

Tithing is not a way to balance the scales. Tithing is a way to put your faith in God for your finances. Everything we own belongs to God, tithing is only returning to God what is already His.

You should shouldn't cuss, oogle your neighbors wife or cheat on your taxes because it's just wrong. You're trying to bargin with God, and that doesn't work. In God's sight, wrong is wrong. If you give Him all your money, it's still wrong.

May I put it the way someone told me? Imagine your wife asked you for a day of your time, just to do work around the house and shop and spend time together. While you're probably not excited about that notion, you say, "sure, this Saturday." You figure that way you can get it over with. Well, later that day your friend calls with a proposal that ya'll do something; for example play golf at an exclusive club. you say, "sure," but he tells you it's this Saturday.
You realize you've got to either do what you want or your wife wants. Being a man, we tend to do what we want. so on the way home, you stop at a flower shop and get her flowers, and maybe a jewelry store and drop huge amounts of money on her. so you get home and give them to her and SHE LOVES THEM. she thinks you're the greatest thing in the world, so you figure "now's your time to ask." So you say, by the way, "can we cancel our plans for Saturday? Something came up."
now she realizes that all you have done was try to make up for your selfishness, and not only is she mad at you, she hates the gifts you gave, because they weren't out of love, but manipulation.
God is the same way- He loves your gifts to be because you love Him. But He despises gifts that try to manipulate Him into letting you be selfish.

Also, as far as forgiveness goes, John the Baptist tells us to "bear fruits in keeping with repentance." in other words, if you've repented, there should be a real desire to get away from dishonesty and sin; not to find a way to make it permissable.

You know what? You can NOT tithe and STILL do all of those things.See where the guilt of religion comes in?Just be yourself and get on with life.Paying more to a church doesn't entitle you to do the things that you want to do.YOU DO.

I thought that this whole question of indulges was resolved in the 16th Century with the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation.

go rent the movie LUTHER ! you cannot buy the right to sin, tithing is referred to planting a seed the more you tithe the more you get back.

i do all of those things (except cheat on my taxes) and sometimes i dont have the money to give the 10%.

that's where the foregiveness comes from.
