CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen ) level is a marker of cancer mostly colon cancer.
its role in the initial diagnosis of cancer is controversial ,however its major role is in the follow up of after the treatment (usually surgery).
if the CEA increases it indicates relapse,if continues to decrease or plateau then it indicates continued remission.

CEA is a cancer marker. If positive it may be a sign of cancer, but if negative, it does not rule out cancer. It is only marginally helpful by itself, but as part of a panel of other tests and procedures can be very useful for monitoring someone with cancer or at risk of getting cancer.
