I live in the poorer section of a very affluent area. When I meet fellow city dwellers they always ask "WHERE do you live?". I don't think its any of their business. Its similar to someone asking me how much I make. What's a witty comeback that will show them how petty they are?

These people think they got more than they really have. Most of them are house poor. It strikes me as a real nouveau riche attitude and I wouldn't like it any better if I lived in the most expensive house in the city.

Just say, "I live in a home I can afford."

The polite answer is, "in a great little house on the edge of (community name)". That's a perfect answer even if you have 10,000 square feet--great and little are subjective terms. Your optional answer to evade the question is, "I live in a house that finally feels like home." The bottom line is that you cannot change people asking you that and you need to be confident and not apologetic or explain. Give your area you live in someone to be proud of and someone who breaks the stereotype! There will always be those who want to assign you to a group based on where you live no matter what you say and do--so live above it! Remember, there are 2 major millionaires who still drive their cars from 10 years ago, and there are people in poverty driving Mercedes. Its perception--you live in reality.

Too late! A comeback has to 'come decrease back' interior of 10 seconds (5 once you're actual speaking), in the different case it is glaring you've had to scratch round for one, and also you look no longer witty and awesome, yet sluggish and pathetic. purely reply in a person-pleasant way.

Tell them you live in a better area than they do. Tell them how many of your neighbors you know, and how close you are, and how good your crime watch program is. Play a guessing game, lol.

When they guess the most expensive one, shut them down with the real name of your neighborhod. They will NEVER question the character of a neighborhood again, based on home value.

That will get em. I promise.

I am kind of in the same situation and I just tell them. The trick is not to let their response - if they were asking for the wrong reason - get to you. But, some people might not be judgmental and were just making conversation. I find that people's reactions to things are often a good way to get to know what they are truly like.

Do you mean you live in the poorer section of a town? (i.e. You live in Beverly Hills, but in the poor section) If that's the case, when they ask, just say your town name. You don't have to give details and tell them what side of town. If they keep on pestering you, ask them "What are you going to do with that information?"

Tell them that you just got released from prison for beating people to death with a wire clothes hanger for asking personal questions. Then ask them if they have a room for rent at their place.
