Come on, show them some compassion.

They have obviously met with a huge struggle in their lives to have to give up on reason.

As atheists, we can advance our understanding of the world and the meaning of life, but we mustn't become elitist and begin bashing theists.

Since belief in God is a coping mechanism, shall we at least afford believers some support in their time of need? Through this and the belief in God at the worst of times, won't they eventually make it back to the realms of reason?

Are not hope and emotional support more fundamental to our survival than a life filled with rational understanding?

Cut them some slack.

Yes, another person who has discovered the truth!!! Have you read "The god part of the brain" ? I have, since reading the premise, resolved to not try to pursuade them of their folly any further. They obviously need this belief system, and it would not make them "feel" any better to see the truth. cheers

That sounds like an elitist position also! If one isn't compassionate by nature, they shouldn't pretend. All values must be earned. If compassion isn't a value to someone , then it hasn't earned it's place yet.
It's best to evaluate your own values and see if they match what you think you value. Know thyself.

It's hard to be compassionate when so many religious folk are so agressive and unpleasantly arrogant, vain and selfish and most importantly of all... wrong.
