The so-called 'photon' torpedo is a device using magnetic and gravitational fields to suspend a piece of antimatter within a vacuum chamber.

If it is not shot and stopped before reaching the enemy ship, the fields are shut off, allowing the antimatter to make contact with the normal-matter inside of the container.

The resulting nuclear annihilation-explosion is at point-blank range.

The 'photon' name comes from the fact that when normal matter and antimatter mutually annihilate each other, what is left is gamma ray photons.

The photons generated by an x-ray machine are an order of magnitude or more of lower energy than gamma ray photons (effectively, lower frequency.)

Another big difference is that, so far, the star trek 'photon' torpedo is fictional. Let's hope it always remains so.

Strength.

To wit, it's not the electricity that kills you, but the amperage.

I have had 50,000 volts of static electricty shot through me (hair stands on end and you get a tingling sensation), but since the amps are low, it doesn't causes damage.

Put some amps behind it and you coud die with relatively low wattage.

The photons are weak in an x-ray, compared to a torpedo
