Go onto the Victoria tourist board... there are plenty of things to do... I went in September 2 years ago, pack for the cold! Australia is an amazing place and you will have ALOT of fun there. If you go onto the Victoria tourist board, or wherever, Queensland tourist board, there are sections on there that tell you about accomodation, the cheapest, expensive and about attractions. I hope this helps.

The east side of Australia is Queensland, New south wales, victoria and perhaps you could class Tasmania as east too but more likely south east. South Australia is as it suggests, but on the mainland, western Australia is the same and about 2 hours in time behind the eastern states. The Northern territory is where it is ... the northern part of australia and if you take a line from there to South Australia they are both 30 minutes behind the eastern states in the time zones. I don't know what you would like to see or do in Oz so I can't give advice on where you should go or what to do, it's a bloody big diverse country with all the usual dorks, idiots, biggots, racists, thieves, con artists, and nice ppl you would find anywhere in the world. :)

It's hard to say, because I don't know where your're from...so I don't know what you consider CHEAP/
Figure out what you want to do while you're there, and then research where that's possible. No matter where you go in Australia there are cheap, decent hostels....
I spent a 5 weeks in Australia last November and my favorite place was Sydney. I stayed in the Sydney Central Hostel and I loved it. The people were wonderful, the travel desk was really helpful, and organized trips if you didn't want to go adventuring on your own. They have a pool, a game room, a great cafe...and it's right across from the train/subway station and on a main bus line.

which was great...Sydney has so much to do it would take years to explore it all....I'd love to have the time and money to try! If I could, I'd move there in a heartbeat.
Have fun!

why would you want to go to austrailia anyway
to bloody hot, full of aussie's going on about how wonderful there country is and how big everything is, and a racist bunch as well
they emulate everything about america,
full of animals that can kill you land and sea,
and they talk funny to "no worries mate, fair dinkums"
and the beers not good either, bloody barbaque's burning everywhere what more needs to be said,
if i where you i would book a nice little b&b in Bognor.
