I would get a baby picture of you with them if not just you or just them getting married:
Have it framed with a matt that is a few inches wider so you can write in on the matt.
Tell them what a lifetime of love meant to you. How greatful you are they stayed together in a world of marriages that are falling apart. Congrats them on getting past arguements. Proving to the world one more couple made it through a lifetime and so on.
They likely do not need another nic-nac. A gift from the heart is so meaningful.
If you are at a loss for words, take the matt with the picture around to other close family members and have them write in some memories or kind words and so on.
Have fun.

On a 50Th anniversary it is traditional to give something silver, My brother celebrated his 50 some years ago and we all got them something silver. Have you ever thought of a "Mother's ring" for your mom? Maybe a silver watch for your dad or a combined gift might be better. But Silver is traditional

Don't be a damned fool ask them its their wedding anniversary don't blow it by guessing and don't take I don't know for an answer, they never took it from you mas a child. Get direct to the point. Most important of all don't be cheap make it something they will not forget. you can hang a lot of **** on the walls, but memories are personal and denote love and respect above all else!

After 50 years of marriage I'd guess they pretty much have all they need, so I'd go for something personal. How about sneaking in and taking lots of their stored old photos and putting them in nice albums for them? Or possibly just taking a few and making one nice album? Or taking their wedding photo and have it put in a beautiful frame with an engraved message from you? Or an album of just pictures of them alone thru the years past to present?

If you can afford it, buy them a nice vacation somewhere.
If that's a little out of the price range, get them something that will commemorate the event as well as the births of yourself and any other siblings as a family.
