My daughter, at 27, had my only grandchild, born with Down Syndrome. No forewarning at all. No genetic history in the family. Could her eating disorder have contributed to this? Just desperately trying to figure out how this occurs for no apparent reason.

Not likely. Down's Syndrome is carried in the genes. Might be from his side of family. Who cares. Children with Down's Syndrome are soooo loving and soooo much fun. Enjoy your grandchild.

The eating disorder had nothing to do with it. It is a random genetic anomaly most likely. I have a son with Down syndrome (an absolute joy and a miracle baby) and neither my husband nor I had any family history. The age of the mother was once thought to be the biggest contributing factor, however, there is a school of thought that older women were just more likely to not terminate a pregnancy where DS was diagnosed prenatally. In the DS groups I belong to, most of the mothers are younger woman in their 20s and early 30s.

Don't fret...it's natural to want to know "why", but don't let it get in the way of enjoying your grandchild. Children with DS have so many more opportunities and are being allowed to reach their full potential. They will do most everything that any other child will do, it just might take a little longer. Celebrate every milestone, and PLEASE...make sure that your daughter gets your grandchild into Early Intervention therapy programs right away...it is never too soon to start working on strengthening muscles and working on coordination. I think you will find this child to be the most precious thing in the world!

Good luck

eating disorder has no link to the causage of down syndrome in a child. try to not focus on the guilt, anger, sorrow or what ever negative-ness you're feeling. Lots of down syndrome kids live to be great fantastic responsible adults who are an inspiration to other down syndrome people and everyone around them. They are a joy and they seem to be constantly happy for some reason. I know a down syndrome adult and she is coping just fine. She even has a stable job and is friendly to people. She's no different from the others who have a normal chromosome count.

Besides she's your granddaughter and your daughter is now a mommy! That in itself is a cause for celebration. So do what gradmas do best and shower her with all your love till she's spoilt.

Enjoy her!

Down syndrome is caused either because of genetic history but can also be caused by a random mutation/chromosomal mistake.
My sister has a lovely daughter at seven years old and she has the syndrom because of the random mistake and the was also no forewarning.
Don't think an eating disorder can cause a mutation.

down syndrome is not associated with family history..mostly its found in the babies of old women ( when the mother gets pregnant when she is more than 40 years old).
in the other hand its not associated with eating syndrome at all,its a problem in cell division which leads to 47 chromosomes cells instead of the normal set of 46 chromosomes.

no, age is the biggest factor in down syndrome. its all about incorrect meiosis, where the splitting apart of identical genes during production of eggs or sperm occurs incorrectly. resulting in a gamete (egg or sperm) with the wrong number of chromosomes. when women are young, all this happens the right way, but as our bodies get older, the eggs that we have (remember, women are born with all their eggs halfway through meiosis, another split still happens) get older too, and mess up. genetic predisposition is also a possibility, but age is the big factor.

Eating is not the cause. Forget the guilt.
It goes back in time. Your pediatrician can explain.

It happens on a periodic basis. No one knows why. But, don't despair. I have seen hundreds who are able to accomplish productive work and actually live alone, traveling to their job alone.
There is lots of help and support out there.
