Death is permanent withdrawal of your consciousness from the body you are wearing in this moment.
After that moment there are events as some sort of judgment, etc....
Most of souls come back to the material plane very soon. Not all souls are living in the same place - at all (after death).

This will answer your question only if you believe the bible, if not just skip me. The bible teaches Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: Everyone will be judged by jesus Christ after they die or after the rapture. Christians, people who are saved or born again, not people who just do good or go to a certain church and call themselves christian, will not be judged by our sins at our judgment, cause Christ took care of our sins once and for all at our faith choice in the death burial and resurection of Christ. We will be judged by our works as a Christian like going to church, reading the bible, praying, loving others, sharing the Gospel, and so on. Our sin, no matter how evil, disgusting or satanic, we think it is, it will not be brought up at our judgment. However, those who didnt accept Christ as their personal saviour will have every sin and every oppertunity they had to be saved revealed in front of everybody. Everything we tried to keep secret and hidden will be revealed on that day. No where in Gods word does it say we will be reincarnated, cease to exist, or no one will will go to hell. People think that it would be impossible to judge that many people but understand that God doesnt live in time but outside of time itself.
