Y. pestis was discovered in 1894 by Swiss/French physician and bacteriologist from the Pasteur Institute, Alexandre Yersin, during an epidemic of plague in Hong-Kong. Yersin was a member of the Pasteur school of thought. Shibasaburo Kitasato, a German-trained Japanese bacteriologist who practiced Koch's methodology was also engaged at the time in finding the causative agent of plague. However, it was Yersin who actually linked plague with Yersinia pestis. Originally named Pasteurella pestis, the organism was renamed in 1967

hi, i do microbiology. Organisms names just change as time goes on and more and more things are learnt about them. All organisms are placed in various species groups based on their physical, chemical and various other attributes. Also has 2 do with their resevoir of infection and their virulence factor.

Like 4 example helicobacter pylori use 2 belong 2 the group campylobacter and was called campylobacter pylori, but as scientific techniques advanced it was found that C.pylori had more difference 2 the other oragnisms in the group than similarities. Due this factor it was reorganised and renamed, just the same as pasteurella pestis was renamed 2 yersinia pestis.

There was mutation, due to environmental factors. In other words, the medium for growth of the Pasteurella pestis changed and this caused P. pestis to mutate to Y. pestis.

Molecular biology allows us to more accurately determine which species a bacteria belongs to. This means that we now know that the bacteria that causes the black plague is most closely related to other bacteria in the Genus Yersinia, hence the change of name.
