Have you thought of trying an RSPCA homing centre for an unwanted pup? They don't just get mongrels, some expensive pedigree dogs turn up too.
Useless info, 7 years ago I rehomed a mongrel dog from the local cat and dog shelter (in Newcastle) and there were all sorts of dogs needing good homes.
