I am doing the same in a few months time. I am going to Thailand first, you can stay in a hostel, and the cost of living is very cheap. Asia is a fantastic place to travel through. You could spend 6 months there and only see such a small amount. I am going to Thailand for a few months and then on to Australia, after that I don't know. But I wish you and your girlfriend good luck, you'll both have a great time.

Go to Cairns (Australia) you'll get some good accommodation, not have to dodge any bullets
you'll have the following on the doorstep
* Great barrier reef (i'd recommend going on the Falla, a sailing ship rather than a catamaran like quicksilver, as the sailing ship has more character and great staff)
* Wild World (if your girlfriend likes animals, have a pic taken cudding a koala, feel kangaroos)
* Ellis Beach (best in the world, incredible & usually empty)
* Tjapukai (aboriginal dance and cultural attraction)
* Skyrail (longest in the world)
if you went to Cairns, you wouldn't really need to go anywhere else, spend time there, have a great one and go away again another time. it really is a stunning place with millions to do, go into atherton and you've got the crystal caves, millaa millaa falls, paronella park, Babinda boulders (aboriginal story)

Canada is great, and you can find plenty of cheap places to stay. Highly recommend. Sweden, as the rest of Scandinavia, is very beautiful, but also very expensive! Worth it though ( Norway is even nicer!!!) . New Zealand- never been, but hear it's gorgeous. Vietnam.... very beautiful, but also very, very poor. But definitely worth a visit. You might want to add Thailand to the list. It's gorgeous, cheap and -apart from way down south- safe for travellers.

if your not taking transport; buy a unlimited months rail/bus pass before you go. It's like £300 and you can travel all across 29 countries, using as many buses / trains as you need to (including sleepers - which is handy).
Travel to a place, stay a while using the buses as free access. then train it to a new location, and do the same all over again.
it means you can criss-cross the whole of europe (inc north africa) for a month and never pay a penny for transport.
* Might cover local ferry links too.

My cousin who lives in Australia went to Vietnam on his honeymoon and thought it was great. Apparently people in that part of the world think nothing of travelling to places like Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia etc. I suppose they are as much on the doorstep for Australians than anything else!
If you were travelling in a camper, Scandinavia would be ideal, lot of driving mind.

I'm going to Ecuador for a couple of months at the end of the year. It's an absolutely beautiful country, and very cheap. Also very safe, which is surprising for a country which borders Columbia!
Nobody speaks any English over there though, so you need to have at least a wee bit of Spanish under your belt.

Ive camper van around europe which was brilliant, especially the alps (but then im an outdoor person) and scandanavia (terribly expensive stock up on food and drink).
Ive friends who have done australia, US and canada. NZ seems to be my friends recommendations out of all those. I really like idea of trans-highway across canada!
Enjoy whatever you do.
