When you are in the install application when it asks you, say preserve filesystem, and it should save your stuff.
Name your new usernames something else though.

Try re-installing XP, it should prompt you to recover previous installation or proceed with a new installation. Select recover and follow the instructions, this will protect you data. The only fly in the ointment is that you may have a damaged FAT (file allocation table), if this is the case then you will have to overwrite the FAT, at which point you will lose everything. I hate to say it but the backing up of your critical files periodocally to cd of dvd is the only surefire way to avoid this predicament.
Hope this helps

With a bootable XP installation disc, re-install Windows XP without formating the drive and desturbig FAT. You can choose the option during the installation process(Keep original File system).
Alternative:
Attaching to a different PC, slave your hard disc. Copy all the essentials, then format and again copy all the programmes and documents. (Caution: All the programme will may not work properly. But you can save your documents at least).
Good luck.

If you boot the laptop up from the cd then go to install windows it gives you the option to install in the same place... If you do this all documents and programs will still be there...
DO NOT FORMAT THE DISK THOUGH!!!
Before that though try the fixdmbr command from the recovery console... That may fix it depending in the boot issue...
More details will help... Email me red270172@yahoo.com for more help...

Windows XP has an option to "repair exsisting windows" option. If that doesn't work, install a new HD and after completing the installation connect your original HD external and copy over all data that you desire. Fresh HD and windows plus all your data.

fix boot? Do you mean you've tried fixing your XP using XP installation CD? You can fix XP this way without losing data but program may not be working after that.
