Actually, some older people are disrespectful too... It is not a
matter of age, but only a matter of education... If disrespectful young, cannot see how one would be respectful older... If they
never had the knowledge of respect, it does not come with age...
The reason why young people should respect their edlers is not
because they were here longer, but because if you are in this
world alive and breathing, and sitting on a bench, and going to school, an taking a bus, etc... it is because the prior generation
made all this happened for the betterment of your generation, and
so on will the young generation o for the next generation...
If you have all of this now, the elders must have done something
right somewhere in the past...
They do deserve respect, even if senile........

They don't, its just that older people expect it, I personally think some of the older people in this world are down right rude to the younger generation, they say you have to earn respect well maybe if they spend a bit of time earning it they might recieve some back, I was brought up to respect my elders so I have done but last week I had my young nephew stand up on a bus so an elderly lady could have his seat, she shouted at me and said I had no right making her look old and inferior, I told her I hadn't it was just her lack of respect and bad manners that did that to her.

It's not really a question of having to respect them. Respect is a two way street. If people older than me are respectful towards me, I will show them the same courtesy. However, if they push in front of me in the cue, I will question their motivation and their right to do so.
No human being, however old or young, has a right to take away the rights of another.
I'm 29 and I still get treated badly by older people now and again. I actually find most teenagers very respectful and so show them the same courtesy.

It drives me mad as well. Im 28 and old people still treat me like crap. I was stood in a que in a shop yesterday and this old woman came and just pushed in front. If I had done that they would have had a go at me.
I hate it when they travel at rush hour and expect you to give up your seat for them. If Im sat on the seats at the front that specifically say give your seat, then yes I will. But if not I dont see why I should have to. I got on the bus first, they can see how busy it is, they shouldnt get on if they cant stand. Or not travel at peak times!

I think we should all respect one another wether we are old or young.
I am now 76 years old and about four years ago I went to work in my local Tesco store each evening for three hours. Most of the staff were very much younger than myself (mostly teenage boys)
They were so kind and helpful to me,Lifting for me etc, they used to call me the old granny (which I was)but they were so very kind.In turn I made sure I was very respectful to them because they deserved this,so you see it cuts both ways.I think the two instincts you mention are disgusting and the older people should have known better, its people like that who give us all a bad name.
Good Luck for the future Regards Doreen Pearce.

We all want to be respected, no matter what age group we are in.
If we treat every individual we meet with respect, until they actually show that they don`t deserve it, then I bet we would all be very pleasantly surprised at the response, Remember age has nothing to do with it, it`s the character that counts, as you can see with the variety in some of these answers. An ignorant slob can be a teenager, middle aged, or 100 years old. Please don`t blame anyone just because they are in a certain age bracket.

Because we put a roof over your head, feed you, pay for your phone, car, insurance and work our fingers to the bone making you happy. We also have traveled the world, seen just about everything there is to seen, and have the knowledge you will never have as long as you live. Always respect those that are older even when you're older. Those "older" people you speak of are a plethora of information and knowledge, now go to bed!

everyone has to respect everyone else. the custom however is to visibly respect more the older ones. take it this way - when you will be at their age and a little weak, scared and insecured - what would you expect from others? thats it - they want to be privileged for being the senior citizens and so that you get it too when you are at their stage you are expected to give it to them now.
they may not reciprocate your respect - why care! if you dont want to feel bad later thinking you have been mean, keep respecting them. if you think you can just go along fine without doing them any favour, well, just be yourself. just make the best choice ...

I think respect has to be ernt regardless of age, Older people can't push in front of a line of people just because they are older. This subject really annoys me, I'm 27 and i was in a shop with my lo in his pram we had top squeeze past this old woman as there wasn't much room one of my bags hit her legg i said sorry stright away and carried on paying. The next thing she said was "at least you could of said sorry" i thought WTF and replay well i did say sorry quite nasty back by this time. She did seemed shocked by this not expecting me to say that. These older people can not tar every one with the same brush i'm 27 and still get fround upon by these people.

I used to have respect for older people, I would hold doors open (nobody ever said thank you) and I would give up my seat on the bus etc. But when I was 8 months pregnant, nobody held doors for me or give up their seats, in fact old women used to push in front of me in the bus queue! so they can stick respect where the sun don't shine!!!!!!
