Retinal implant surgery involves implanting a microchip on the retinal surface or just under the retina. The microchip sits atop the damaged macula and forms images that are transmitted to the brain.

This surgery is currently investigational and should be regarded as a research endeavor only. It is far from perfected. The vision one can get from present day technology is barely seeing forms and light. However, for a totally blind person even this gross level of vision is nothing short of a miracle.

I have listed below some of the companies and organizations involved in retinal implant surgery. They are from Harvard and Hopkins from the US and one company in Germany.

Your question specifically mentions macular degeneration. I want you to understand that in macular degeneration the peripheral vision is still intact and magnifiers or implantable telescopes will offer more help than retinal implant surgery. A person with macular degeneration is NOT totally blind in the sense that they are able to still see light and large objects. Further, by eccentric fixation, they can train to read also. Therefore, given the present poor resolution of images produced by retinal implants, I do not think patients with macular degeneration will benefit a great deal from them.

Eyegirl has very rightly adviced you to use low vision aids and to seek ways to slow the vision loss due to macular degeneration with vitamins etc.

I do not believe retinal implants are available. Macular degeneration is a debilitating disease - but there are things to help. There are vitamins that seem to help with macular degeneration - slowing the process down and perhaps even reversing to some extent. Look for Maxivision - it seems to be the most complete. In the later stages of macular degeneration - low vision devices can be useful in enhancing vision. Contact your local optometrist or state optometric board to ask about where to go for low vision training. Good luck

Hello,
It may sound impossible but it's really easy to improve your vision without surgery with some specific eye exercises. I'm following this method http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=413 and it's working incredibly well.
It's a must have program.
Good Bye

LAsik Surgery is very cheap in India. There is one company that is very famous in India that arranges lasik surgery for foreigners in India. They are called the Forerunners Healthcare.I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories.I have also read that they arrange financing for american and canadian patients as lasik surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. The cost savings are incredible. As a doctor i personally believe that your laser surgery can be easily handled in India as the quality of healthcare available here is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.
