Kennel Cough in dogs will stimulate a coarse, dry, hacking cough about three to seven days after the dog is initially infected. It sounds as if the dog needs to "clear it's throat" and the cough will be triggered by any extra activity or exercise. Many dogs that acquire Kennel Cough will cough every few minutes, all day long. Their general state of health and alertness will be unaffected, they usually have no rise in temperature, and do not lose their appetite. The signs of Canine Cough usually will last from 7 to 21 days and can be very annoying for the dog and the dog's owners. Life threatening cases of Kennel Cough are extremely rare and a vast majority of dogs that acquire the infection will recover on their own with no medication. Cough suppressants and occasionally antibiotics are the usual treatment selections.

If you are worried though please take your animal to the vet.

It sounds as if the dog has something stuck in its throat.

Dogs can recover without any medication but Kennel Cough can develop into Bronchitis and/or Tonsillitis and the dog can become very ill.

The cough changes into a hacking or wheezing cough if the dog gets worse. Some dogs struggle for their breath and have to stop if they try to run or go up stairs.

Childrens' cough medicine is sometimes recommended but I would be inclined to see whether the dog recovers in a couple of days. If it doesn't then a visit to the Vet should be arranged BUT DON'T TAKE YOUR DOG IN before seeing the receptionist.

Kennel Cough is very easily spread so if you suspect your dog has it you should not go into the waiting room where there will be old and young, sick, vulnerable dogs.

Your Vet will advise you on treatment.

hi kennel cough can be dangerous to dogs it is a harsh hacking sound and im afraid the only treatment is a trip to the vets has your dog had all the injections from a puppy and if so does he she have a booster these should be given once a year if your dog has not had any injections kennel cough may be the least of your worries there is parvo that can kill your dog in 24hrs in bad cases it is spread through other dogs so i would suggest you go see the vet we have been today for harrys annual booster its around £40 a year but gives you peace of mind and if your dog catches any nasties it wont kill them hope this helps good luck

kennel cough is a dry rasping cough as if the dog has something stuck in it's throat. Usually it can be treated with antibiotics and rest as it's made worse with excitement , dogs must be kept in quarantine as kennel cough is highly contagious so can infect whole kennels with just one dog having it.

Its an awful sounding cough. Take your dog to the vet, they can give it some meds to get rid of it. And it very contagious to other dogs. I had a boxer that had it when he was 3 months old. He caught it from my brother in laws older dog. Your dog should stop coughing after one treatment of antibiotics, but it will have to take a week of taking it before its well. Hope this help...
