Remember that Iranian students, many of whom now make up a large part of todays hard core conservative government, stormed the U.S. embassy and over threw the western friendly Shah Palevi to install an Islamic theocracy in the nation. This was in 1978-79. Add in some hostile Iranian moves in the gulf regarding oil and you have a regime that is not U.S. interest friendly. Saddam wasn't a close ally, but he was probably considered to be the lesser of two evils at the time.

We didn't help Iraq invade Iran as far as Military Man Power. What the USA did, was sell/give weapons to Iraq to help them fight Iran.
The USA did it because all diplomatic ties with Iran, were severed after the Iranian IDIOT Students took 52 of our American Citizens, hostage.
It was a very foolish move by the Iranian Government, to let it's students get away with taking over the American Embassy.
By the way, most of the hostage takers from back then, are now in Government positions in Iran.
Even though the USA did not approve of Saddam Husein and his Government, he was the lesser of Two problems in those days.
