The only response is "read the Bible, then you will understand"
I have read the Bible, many times in fact (right now I am on Ezekiel for the fifth time) and it seems more made up than ever this time through. But wait, once I say this someone will say "but the bible isnt our religion, it is having a personal relationship with Jesus" Bullshit, your religion IS the Bible, and I want you to prove to me otherwise if you dont believe it.

Do you peopel not understand how much this cult is pulling humanity behind? It must be eliminated and should be treated as a terrorist group.

jorginson, when I say the bible I mean Old Testament, new Testament, The three mormon texts, and a few other texts. Overall I do about 3500 pages for just Christianity.

The Bible consists of testimony of both the workings of mankind and the miracles of God. While none of us were "there" about what the authors are testifying about, the only thing we CAN ask about the Bible and it's integrity, - is does it (the original written text, not today's re-copied versions) contradict itself?
Some folks don't believe in God, nor his miracles, - and they'd claim it's unreliable when authors claim that humans experienced God's miracles.
But one of the 'tests' is not to say.. "gee, - it seems more 'made up'". That just doesn't help anybody.
And yes, the Bible is our first and foremost authority on knowing "who" Jesus is, -and what that means to us. Others typically add extra-biblical writings, as other reliable sources as to the knowledge of who God is (non-protestants). Protestants take a more "Bible - only" stance.

You should maybe try to read the New Testament.
You can read the Old testament over and over and never understand Christianity. The most important books of the Bible are Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Each of these are Gospels and tell the story of Jesus and what HE said and what HE did.
If you get a red letter Bible and study what he said, you will see that what people are saying to you is correct (about the personal relationship) see especially John 15. I hope this helps.
BTW: not all Christians are the same, I am sorry you may have had a bad experience with some. Most, however are good peace-loving people.

Its laziness on the part og the christian because they themselves have not read the bible with comprehension. First off, each Individual Book with in the Bible has a point to make and its not about what the people did. Second, once you grasp the concepts put forth your whole life really does change and you have to apply the teachings of the Hero (there is only one) just to remain sane. I have also come to the conclusion that God knows what he wants from us is not for the weak hearted, so he is strengthening our hearts. Not the cardio-vascular heart, but the heart that others see. That this information is not taught to the run of the mill, weak-hearted, christian, says we have been lied to and have been fooled into thinking wisdom comes from books, not experience. Religion is a business, not a sharing of good news. So your right but only because somebody needs to say it until it sinks in to the politibo that we cannot imagine our written or memmorized wisdom is better than what God gives those he has chosen, for our worlds peace, everyday.

You can read a 100 times the Bible , it will still be foreign to you as War and Peace of Tolstoy.
Bible is not your history and geography book, but always is a theological book about history of God work in time.
And like any theological theme you need to have a lot of base knowledge to understand it, of course protestants would not agree with me, but if you by a book about electronics you need base knowledge to interpret the book and understant it.
Bible will give you many arguments against a christian if you take the parts out of the whole , and push it to someones nose. But if you first read explanations about society , culture, religion , of that time in which the book is writen then you get a totaly diferent picture.
So please find some good course in bible theology and read it first.
If you do not have time , then read the new testament , it is much easier to understand then the old,at list some of to books of new testament.
And do not try to find historical facts, all the books of new testament have been writen with purpose for some specific believers in the parts of litle asia and roman empire.
Read if you like Psalms, Johns epistols, proverbs, they are perhaps easier to understand.

If you made a derogatory comment and all they're teling you is to read the Bible, then they are far better than you! Think about it, if I made a derogatory statement of your mother, you'd most likely come back with a knee jerk reaction like the person who asked if you were Muslim.
However, if you were just commenting about the validity of the Bible, and they're trying to tell you to find the answer in the Bible, then that's different. People tend to be blinded by faith and cannot understand why you can't accept things as they have.
Good luck finding someone who is receptive to your questions about the Bible and if you do actually find someone willing to hear the bad with the good and debate intelligently about it, let me know. I have yet to find a devout Christian who doesn't fall back on that 'read the Bible' excuse when they cannot give me a straight answer to my queries.

Why are you feeling so bad and tensed about what you believe (or don't believe)? Since you're so convinced about your belief, it should give you sobriety and confidence (especially since you identify yourself an humanist). Since you found the truth, shouldn’t you feel (at most) sorry for these poor Christians that waste their lives in delusion and do not enjoy their lives to the full like you do? And if you think that they're not "poor" but fraudulent, then shouldn't your superiority instruct you to ignore them? Is there a specific reason for reading Ezekiel for the 5th time since the previous 4 were a waste of time? What ever happened to Time Magazine or Mickey Mouse or Homer, Socrates, Plato, T.S Eliot, Rudyard Kipling ? Remember, you're absolutely free to chose not to read the Bible. So I could tell you "DO NOT read the Bible". Does that make you feel better? Stop it! Ignore it! Just live your life your way (I'm not saying that you don't). Better? Now if you believe in a god of a short ask him to reveal himself to you.
One thing is for sure Matt. Jesus Christ is alive; He is knocking at your door and desires to give you life in abundance. He has died for you as well.

I'm a Neopagan Satanist and personally, I've read the bible dozens of times.
I'll be honest with you, though. A few years ago, I had my head up my a$s and I would always preach to people about contradictions in the bible, and whatnot. But let's face it... every work has contradictions in it.
Whenever Fundamentalist (or damn-close) Christians start interpreting the words out as verbatim fact, people start to say, "what the f*ck! wait a minute! something's wrong here! oooohh! look! right there! it says the exact opposite as it says right here!!" Likewise, whenever Fundamentalist (or damn-close) non-Christians start to interpret the words as verbatim (not necessary as fact), they start to offend Fundamentalist Christians who only tell them to "read the bible to understand it."
This isn't only coming from a secular individual's point-of-view, it's also coming from a HUMAN BEING's point-of-view... one which doesn't have his head up his a$s in any way...
The bible isn't meant to be taken literally. I personally think of it as the one of the greatest fictions ever written. But I don't look at it with the same level of disgust I used to look at it. It's only meant to guide people through the stories it tells you. Sure, sometimes god may be a merciless motherf*cker, but it's the big picture that counts... not the talking donkey, not the parting waters of the sea, not the random people who aren't mentioned (Cain's wife), or any other inaccuracies or absurdities.
Shiva has how many arms? 4? You don't hear many people constantly NAG about that, because almost everyone recognizes the fact that Hinduism is a comfort religion. It's been proven to make you live a healthy life. Nobody argues with that, even though it's absurd to have that many arms. For the same reasons, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity aren't comfort reasons. This is why the absurdities are ALWAYS and CONSTANTLY brought out to the spotlight so people can nag and bicker about it.
But I don't blame you, really. The whole anti-Jesus conspiracy thing is all over the place, ever since Dan Brown's over-active imagination became available to the masses for close inspection.
I'm not a Christian. I've never even been one, even when I was taught Christian prayers since I was 1 years-old. I've NEVER cared for Christianity because I was born with a remarkable sense of logical and reasonable thinking ability. But this doesn't mean that I'm the type which throws a bible across the floor, steps on it, and starts preaching to people about how untruthful it is.
Ok, that covered the non-Christians. Let's go on to the Christians.
Whenever you tell a Christian that the bible is false, there's a good chance that they'll get defensive and say something to the effect of "it's god's word and it's fact." However, I strongly disagree with this. Whenever I ask them to prove it, they tell me that I'll get my proof once I'm judged and sent to the fiery pits of hell. Whatever, I suppose. Let me have it.
So this is my opinion:
The bible is nothing but fiction. The stories in the bible are just that... stories. They only serve one purpose: to get people closer to the diety that is referred to as "G'D." If people only follow the stories (the big picture), they'll be better people for it. If they only follow it word-for-word, we might as well go back to living in the Dark Ages, because we'll get so intensified and overwhelmed at the verses we misinterpret, that we'll set up a new Crusade.
Sadly, the Fundamentalist Muslims are going through this now. Their "Crusade" is called "Jihad," meaning "Holy War."
Even when non-Christians start to interpret the biblical verses word-for-word, conflict will start to arise because we're living in a society of proving the other guy wrong, not helping everyone to share the same progressive viewpoints.

One thing you have to remember is that the bible has been interpreted and edited many times. Then you have the different books that are allowed in the King James vs the Catholic Bible.
I think you have to look past the interpretations. I have researched different passages to the original hebrew translations and am amazed at the difference in meaning. I personally use the messages in Jesus' words , actions and reactions. He was the only spiritual teacher in the bible.
As you can tell I am not your typical christian in that I am not insulted by questions or disbelief. I personally believe that each religion has a piece of the puzzle. There is one scripture that tells us that each man has to work out his own walk with GOD. That scripture opened my eyes to the inconsistencies in the bible as man made. Some will tell you that the bible never contradicts itself. I have a few that come to mind. Moses got the 10 comandments one of which was "thou shall not kill" then GOD supposedly commanded them to take a land and kill all (including women and children) the land? Thou shall have no other GOD's before me, then he sent Jesus for us to worship as our GOD?
I guess what I am trying to say is to listen to your heart, your spirit, your soul and it will tell you what is truth and what path to follow.

Sadly, many who tell you to read the book take it on faith that its the word of GOD...They dont understand that it was written by man and that it has many subjects that simply make no sense. They can never prove anything to you. No one alive now was alive back then...no one can tell you that a snake actually talked or not. But the logic of that wont keep people from insisting that every word in the book is true. The same flaw exists in very single belief system on the globe. Even if something did happen its been twisted and changed over time, just like our current history books. Believe in what you see and know......try to learn what you dont know but never accept anything on faith alone.

I must apologize beforehand on this. I am an athiest. this isn't christian friendly. The bible is supposedly only a part of the christian faith, however, many christians hold the bible to be the SOURCE of their faith. you have pinpointed nearly the exact reason that I am an athiest. Ironically, I will pull from the bible for this. what WRITING did the apostles have to hold their faith? moses? any of the many figures found in the bible... NONE. they believed because, as polly said, they had to. *nice answer polly, nice answer*. Christians look more to the bible than to god. is it really that hard to look beyond the writing in there? made up or not, it's a GUIDELINE. if you are a christian and think like this, good for you. it's not the pure and simple law of your faith!! your FAITH is your religion, not your DOCTRINE. OMG thanks for giving me something to put in my blog. I'm switching to that.
