You need nerves of steel to drive anywhere in china. I live in Beijing and have been been driving in the states for 35 years. About 20 hours behind the wheel in even light traffic was enough for me. But if you have the nerve and a license elsewhere, try checking where you are from about how to get an international license. If you get one in china I don't think there is a test, only pay a fee. Check with the local police dept. There are several chinese agencies who are advertising in thatsbj.com online magazine to get licenses for foreigners for a fee, and its supposed to take 1 month. Be careful dealing with these kind of people.

International Driving licenses are not valid in China, you have to get a chinese driving license at FESCO. It's pretty easy to pass, it's only a written test with 100 questions. It's about 800 Kuai including all the health exams, and so on.

If you only want to have a motorbike you could get an electrical one without a license, they are cheap (1600-2500 Kuai) and pretty fast. Another possibility is to get one of the slower motorbikes or scooters with fake plates. If you want to buy a motorbike in Beijing send me a message, my friend wants to sell one at the moment.

First you need is a full body steel armor and buy a life insurance. I'm in Xiamen and here also driving is crazy, if there is any rule for traffic, Chinese don't know them yet.

Well, anyway, about International driver license, it may be not valid in some cities, so the best thing is you apply for a local one. In my case I had working visa, so I only needed a copy of my Mexican driver license, pass a weird test of 10 funny questions, pay the fee (about 200 RMB) and I was done. Got a Chinese driver license for 5 years... but now I like more taking taxi :(
