The D50 has equal or better noise performance (not much grain at fast ISO 'film speeds'). The 350D uses CompactFlash cards and the Nikon uses SD cards. The Canon is slightly smaller and weighs less. There are other details you may not care about like the number of frames per second, whether the mirror can be locked out of the way, and exposure compensation adjustments. You may find that the Nikon is less expensive.

However, if you look at the $700 350D vs. the $700 Nikon D70s, the D70s wins based on extra features and build quality.
All of these cameras are equally reliable and durable. Both companies also offer a wide range of affordable lenses, and you can find tons of used lenses and third party lenses for both systems. Finally, both companies offer an excellent upgrade path with mid-range to pro cameras and pro lenses.
So look at the specs - if you don't need the extra features of the 350D/D70s, why pay for them?
And compare them side by side in a camera shop: the way a camera feels is very important, too.

to start with...d70 is better then d50 anyways
350d is better but d50/70 is a great deal for the money
350d is better at iso above 800 hands down
i like the lens choices canon gives more then the lens options for nikon aswell
d50/70 are built much better and dont feel like a plastic toy
if you are considering 350d...i sugest look at the 20d...its gone down in price now that the 30d is out.

NIKON D50...trust me...you won't regret it...i saw a comparison between those cameras and a sony done by a newspaper company..and they decided to give the trophy to NIKON...the difference between D50 n D70's price is just so small...why not get the D70 instead
