It's kind of a Mac vs PC argument. Beyond the megapixels there isn't really enough difference between the two and it boils down to personal preferences, including whether you are a Nikon fan or a Canon fan like myself. If you already have compatible lenses you will be pleased with the matching camera, bearing in mind that the focal length will appear to change by 1.5X (1.6X for the Canon), i.e. a 50mm lens will act like a 75mm or 80mm lens.
The 350D has more pixels (8.2 vs 6.2 megapixels) so the recorded images will be sharper and make better enlargements. The D50 has equal or better noise performance (not much grain at fast ISO 'film speeds'). The 350D uses CompactFlash cards and the Nikon uses SD cards. The Canon is slightly smaller and weighs less. There are other details you may not care about like the number of frames per second, whether the mirror can be locked out of the way, and exposure compensation adjustments. You may find that the Nikon is less expensive.
Decisions, decisions!

The Nikon D50 is a $550 body. The Canon 350D is a $700 body.
You get what you pay for: the 350D wins based on extra features and extra megapixels.
However, if you look at the $700 350D vs. the $700 Nikon D70s, the D70s wins based on extra features and build quality.
All of these cameras are equally reliable and durable. Both companies also offer a wide range of affordable lenses, and you can find tons of used lenses and third party lenses for both systems. Finally, both companies offer an excellent upgrade path with mid-range to pro cameras and pro lenses.
So look at the specs - if you don't need the extra features of the 350D/D70s, why pay for them?
And compare them side by side in a camera shop: the way a camera feels is very important, too.

to start with...d70 is better then d50 anyways
350d is better but d50/70 is a great deal for the money
350d is better at iso above 800 hands down
i like the lens choices canon gives more then the lens options for nikon aswell
d50/70 are built much better and dont feel like a plastic toy
if you are considering 350d...i sugest look at the 20d...its gone down in price now that the 30d is out.

digital insurrection is likewise properly-known because the 300D. 400D is already out. 350D has some "improvements" over the 300D (digital insurrection). It has a extremely larger Mp (megapixel), it really is smaller and it really is lighter. I have a 300D yet opted now to not purchase the 350D nor the 400D because they're too small and too elementary for my likeing. Used with a specialist lens, it really is frequently heavy, or a lengthy telephoto, the steadiness os all off. in case you intend to apply it for travelling or plan to apply purely the provided equipment lens, then get the 350D. I do freelance artwork and that i'm prepared to carry the more suitable weight for more suitable useful stability. The ensuing pictures from the 6.1Mp 300D is sturdy sufficient as a lot as A4 prints. The 350D may theorectically yeild more suitable useful pictures with the 8Mp yet presented that the lens used is able to unravel to that degree.
