Check for Microchip and Lost ads daily in the newpaper. Also contact local vets offices and pet stores for lost ads and don't forget to place a found one there too. Also see if you can put up a flyer at the local schools, resturants and churches. Most places are willing to help if you take down the flyers after either a week or the dog has gone home. Oh and check with local Dog Rescue places they may have been contacted by the owner or may be able to help you out in finding the owner
Remember a dog can go about 2-5 miles a day just wondering around, I found this out when I lost my dog from a golden retriever rescue

Yes, just go to a vet or shelter and ask for them to check for a chip. Some people dont register them though. And theres at least one that can't be read by all scanners. But its a good chance you'll find them that way if there is a chip.
Try to put up flyers, and some newspapers do place found ads for free, since you are gaining nothing. Ask about it in different newspapers. Also put in that you want the person to describe the dog, you dont wanna give him to someone who just wants a free dog.
Good luck!

You might try posting your flyers in all your neighborhood businesses. Or if you have a bunch of flyers get some of the neighborhood kids go door to door or post them on every corner. You might even have some of them go up to the grocery stores and put them on car windshields. I tried everything when I found my dog, mine because nobody ever claimed her. I held me breath every time the phone rang or when I would read the ads. Because after a day with this gal, I would have died if I would have had to given her up. It's sad to think that somebody probably just dumped this beauty. But I was getting ready to adopt one, so it couldn't have worked out better for me or her. Most stray dogs don't get so lucky. Good Luck to you.

Join yahoo group K9 Alert where people post for lost and found dogs.
Take dog in to a vet's office or sheleter to scan him to see if he has a microchip.
Place flyers in all the private and public shelters, with his picture, and let the staff know.
Put ad in the classified - they are often free for these ads.

Put up signs that have a picture of the dog that says found and say where he/she was found. Then go to the police station and see if anyone has told them about a lost dog.

If the dog is microchipped the shelter or vet can scan it and track down the owner.
