I did a 6 yr hitch in the USMC, 2 yrs in a rifle company (squad machine gunner) then transitioned to MP. I was in Beirut at the airport in 83 when our barracks got taken out. Worst experience of my life, bar none. I went on some floats on the USS Carl Vinson in the fleet, and saw some things that still amaze me. Overall, it was a hard life, but rewarding on many levels. I learned discipline and integrity. I would without question do it again, maybe even go career.

I am proud of my miltary service, I enlisted in the Marine Corps while I was still in high school, and served in an electronic warfare squadron (radar jammer). I was promoted to Sergeant September 1, 2001. After 9/11, I tried to get temporary orders to a Navy squadron that needed avionics technicians that was deploying on the USS Independence, but my CO said no.

There were many reasons that I wished I could have stayed, but the reasons to leave overpowered them. Still, while I can't honestly say that I enjoyed the Marine Corps, I did my job the best that I could, and I am a better man because of it.

Six years in the Army has provided me with the best and worst times of my life. I spent a year in Iraq and that is something I'll never forget. It gave the sense of doing something that actually matters. My contribution is something that our great grandchildren will learn about.

In the end though I had to get out because of my family. My wife couldn't make i through another year-long deployment. In the three years we were married while I was in the Army only 1 year was spent together.

I would join again and would be proud if my future children chose to join.

Best thing I ever did. The military is not much fun when you get to be a senior ranking NCO or officer, because it is a lot of headaches and you aren't really a "shooter" anymore, but I had a blast the first ten years.

For the most part I enjoyed it. Spent almost 7 years in the military and if I had to do it again I would.
