Do NOT tranquilize you dog for air travel, they can have very bad reactions.
You can send your dog by air if the temp is 85 or less at all the stops, this time of year it will be tough to do. It will probably take about 8 hours to get there. You can also send him by ground transport (no temperature restrictions), but that will take about 6 days or more(very stressful). If he is small enough he can go in a carrier under your seat on the plane (that would probably be the least stressful).

Make sure that you have the your veterinarian has your dog up to date on the vaccinations required as you will not find it easy to get them fast in NYC. Ask your vet to give you the proper amount of tranquilizer for your dog for the time of the trip. Have a good sized plastic kennel that has your dogs favorite blanket and or bed. Make sure that the kennel is properly labeled with your dog's name, your name and cell phone number along with the veterinarian's information. Usually the most important thing prior to leaving for the trip for your dog will be hydration and a light meal the day before the trip. Having water for your dog once you get him/her from the cargo/baggage claim and have a way to clean your dog with a semi wet towel. If you are not going to go with your dog but are sending him/her to NYC make sure that you put the important information of who will be picking up and what is necessary for the care of the dog in a plastic sealed envelope taped on the kennel. Usually America West is the best airline for pets nationally. But try and get an airline that has a straight through flight.

Ask your Vet.. some dogs cannot be tranquilized anymore especially the snub nose... but go online to any airline and look up their air cargo rules for pets... most now days wont ship pets during certain times of the year do to heat and cold.... but each airline is pretty clear in their guidlines... i just reasearched this last march cause i was going to ship a pet from Alaska to arkansas but changed my mind because of the long flight i decided we will drive out next year instead.... anyway good luck
