I am not exactly sure I understand the problem. For atheists the existence of suffering is simply a consequence of life. What many find difficult to explain why there is suffering if there is a bening loving and omnipotent creator God.

If you belief in a personal loving God, it is indeed not immediately clear why God would allow for innocent life to suffer. The key here is Love. Assuming a loving God can imply that Love is the main divine principle to which we are invited. If that is truly so, that all self-cnscious life is invited to join in the love of God, freedom of choice is essential. Love depends on the free choice of two free moral agents. But to have freedom, God must suspend his omnipotence. If he interfered, freedom would be lost, and so would love. This would explain moral evil, in other words, evil that follows from acts of human beings who are able to act their freedom, that is, people who are able to make moral decisions. If they decide against the divine principle of love, their acts will cause suffering.

That explains moral evil, but natural evil. An earthquake will cause lots of suffering, and it is not that the two continental plates drifting into each other make a conscientious choice against love. How then can God allow for such event to cause suffering to so many innocent people? Well, some argue that God punishes those who did wrong by killing them in natural catastrophes, but that is a rather problematic view, especially for Christians. The Christian God is the God of forgiveness, so killing people horribly for their mistakes is not possible. Moreover, how about babies that are killed in natural catastrophes and who simply have not had a chance yet to sin? So, the sin argument does not hold. However, what about the love argument? Can that help us further here? I would argue that it can.

As I have argued freedom is essential for the divine principle of love. Consequently, life has to be free, the emergence of self-conscious beings able tor eceive and repsond accordingly to God's self-communication (i.e., his invitation to love) has to be a process that is free, though directed towards the emergence of self-consciousness. Life therefore has to evolve. For evolution of life and of self-conscious organisms, natural catastrophes are inevitable and in fact in some ways helpful. Again, God cannot but suspend his omnipotence, or else he would interfere with freedom and thus lose the possibility of love.

But that now was a theist's explanation of suffering, a so-called theodicy. An atheist would not have to explain anything. An atheist could argue that since there is no God, suffering comes simply as a result of a world where some suffer from disease or evil acts by others, and it is all possible because there is no God who gave life any purpose.

Well suffering in what way? Disease is caused by germs and bacteria and such. Why is there disease, it is natures way of keeping the population down. People dying and starving, also a part of nature, sad yes, but just part of nature.
As for evil, depends on what you mean by that also. If you mean rapists, child molesters and such, it is all part of psychology. Environment, genetics, mental illness, all play a part in it.
Why does there have to be a reason anyways?
Sometimes things are just what they are. Why does there have to be an explanation for it? I sometimes wonder if that is why people cling so tightly to a God, because they want to know there is a reason for bad things that happen.

First you need to explain what is your meaning of suffering.
Do you refer to suffering from a headache or the death of your pet hamster? Humanity is working towards solving pain, suffering and the evil of this world. Did you know that every 7 years the knowledge of the world doubles? In the meantime what can't be cured must be endured.

All living creatures struggle to survive on the world's limited resources.

It is natural for life to be competitive and for creatures to look out only for their own welfare without regard to the welfare of others. Creatures who behave in that manner usually live longer.

Evil is not limited to humans. All human "sins" (murder, theft, rape, deceit, etc.) are normal in nature.

The one redeeming quality of humanity is that the species has evolved to the point where some individuals actually care about the long-term best interests of the species and the world as a whole instead of merely their own welfare.

Humans are capable of reason. That just makes it all the more sad that most humans won't use it and instead rely on their animal instincts, thereby continuing the evil actions so prevalent in nature.

Suffering exists because humans suffer, for various reasons, but most relating to a lack of food or other resources. Why do people suffer when they don't have food? See: evolution

Evil only exists in the minds of those who believe in it; it is not something thatg exists in objective reality. "Evil" is a quality that we as humans assign to things, not something that is intrinsic to them.

Suffering and bad things happen as a result of other people's actions, or just nature's work. everything's explainable without having to shuv evil and god and all those myths in.

As an athiest, I have to wonder why your god would allow suffering and evil on earth.

People are the reason. Plain and simple.

Because people want to play God, and the primary way they try to demonstrate they are Gods is by inflicting torture and violence on others. And, if at all possible, by murdering them in the most brutal ways possible.

Since humans invent Gods in their own images, I suppose you could argue Gods were responsible.

What is a "so called atheist?" Is that like a "so called bible thumper" meaning a person who thumps his bible to conceal his ignorance? The more thumps, the greater the ignorance?
