are you aware that going to a matsuri festival is a shinto rite? therefore those in attendance are taking part in a shinto festival.

would it be fair to say that a christian at a sakura matsuri would be like a hebrew taking communion at easter?

Not exactly. You have to seperate the religious element from the cultural/ethnic side. So it could be that Jews buy gifts in Xmas, but they don't belive in Christ, just like Chrisitian can attend a matsuri festival without being Shinto....
