For some reason, cats will react that way with anything that is high pitched. Years ago when I still had a cat, I was playing a tape of children's music where it sounded like the Chipmunks. My cat went crazy. Bit me. About climbed the walls, etc. Something with the high pitch sets them off.

I resolved it by not playing that tape anymore, but I don't think that you would want to give up playing the flute....I'm not sure what to suggest in your case.

Sometimes high pitches mean things to animals that humans don't realize. If the sounds isn't hurting his ears, then its probably along those lines, like he thinks your making a challange or that you're holding a kitten that's crying for help.
I know that there's high one note when, if I played it, my cat would come running up and try to bat at the source with a paw, because to him it sounded like I was a kitten crying out in pain.

As answered previously, the high pitched notes probably hurts his ears. The ears of dogs and cats and most animals, for that matter, are much more sensitive and can hear higher pitched notes than we can.

The flute souds differently for some animals, My dog is singing with me when I am playing harminica :) And I am a terrible harmonica player, I know that . So if you try to play guitar ( for example ) and it doesn't matter how good you are. your cat will not bite you :)

1. The noise is probably too much for him to handle. As cats have really sharp hearing.
2. He may wants your attention
3. He could be scared of the noise and may think you are going to hurt him.

My cat gets scared by the sound of garbage trucks and if we touch him he jumps out of fear. But when he sees that we aren't the ones making noise he doesn't get scared. But he hates the noise of vacume and tries to bite the vacume when its turned off.

My guess would be that he just wants you to stop paying attention to "that silver stick thing" and pay more attention to him. I have two cats, one 22 years old, one 3 years old, and both do the exact same thing, and they just want to be pet.

To try to help, what you can try is, when they start biting you, pet them with your foot or something, and continue playing your flute. It helped with my 3 year old cat!

The high pitched notes hurt his ears or he's a music critic. ;)

Its probably hurting his ears..No joke.
Animals hearing is much more sensitive to noise and sounds.
So, some of the notes your playing is whats hurting him...
Ask the vet..more than likely thats what he'll say.

Maybe when you play the flute or sing, he has flashbacks of when he was a young and vibrant 'Bird hunter' and jumps you; thinking you're a juicy morsel! lol
