Is it just me or does anyone else think it is totally whacked that Canada is rescuing Lebanese residents who happen to have dual Canadian citizenship, ahead of Canadian citizens who actually reside full-time, work and pay taxes in Canada?

Why are we giving citizenship to people who have no intention of staying and working in this country?

Are there any kind of guidelines which state that a non-born Canadian citizen must spend time living in Canada, or can they come in, get citizenship and a passport with no follow-up? Does citizenship ever get revoked?

I have no issue with immigration from other countries.

What I have an issue with is when people just use us to get a Canadian passport. We need to have more stringent guidelines around someone's intentions when applying for Canadian citizenship.

Or, do I have it all wrong? If so, educate me, please.

One is usually wrong when making blanket judgements about personal circumstances they are uninformed on.

What do you know about the circumstances in the lives of the people in question? I would suggest very little. It is quite likely that at the time of their emigration to Canada they had every intention of living here permanently. Does that mean they are then prisoners of Canada. Certainly we judge harshly countries that restrict their citizens' movement around the world (as we did with the former Eastern Bloc nations - you may recall the Berlin Wall and the famous defections over, under, around and through it during its years in existence).

Lebanon went through a long period of civil war, occupation and political and military manipulation by both Israel and especially Syria. During that time it is likely that many of the Lebanese-Canadian citizens fled the country seeking peace for their families. Having landed in Canada and settling in, getting their citizenship, they then see peace come to their homeland and feel a call to return there to help rebuild the nation. Many of them would still have lots of family and friends back in their native land as well, and would have the natural human desire to see those loved ones again.

Suddenly, within one week, their homeland is again transformed into a war zone and they want out, want to get their children out, and want their adopted country of Canada to help them as citizens. Remember, there is only one class of citizen. Many Canadians live and work abroad, often they are Canadians by birth and are working in countries with which they have no ethnic ties, only economic opportunities. When situations in those countries deteriorate, as often happens in this world, they want out and depend on Canada to help them.

Why should this be different for Lebanese-Canadians.

BTW: I think everyone freaking out about the evacuation should remember what a big job it is, how suddenly the demand arose, and how few resources the government had in the region. Given those realities, the war zone dangers and the distance, the government is not doing a bad job of reacting on the fly. Could they have done better? Well, sure, its possible. But they could have done a lot worse. And I am not a supporter of this government. But credit should go where it is due.

No, External Affairs does not make a distinction based on residency. You can't have your Canadian citizenship revoked unless you lied on application about committing crimes against humanity. Remember, citizens still get to vote in Canadian elections even if you never step foot in Canada or pay any taxes in Canada. The Conservative Party is determined to get their share of the "ethnic" vote, so that's not going to change anytime soon.

Duuhh!Canadians who actually reside full time in Canada with dorks like you,do not need to be evacuated from Beirut. So why give priority to people who are not there? If you ever need evacuating from anywhere,be careful. You may get shot for trying to push to the front of the line.
Back off and wait your turn if you want fair treatment and stop whining like a baby.

You don't know what you're talking about. They have to be present in the country at least once every six months and they MUST pay taxes.
