"You just wait til you FATHER gets home, mister!"
different combinations of guilt, fear, shame, threats, punishment, etc. Or dad would just give us the 'look' (which always turned my blood to terrified ICE!)

She was a wonderful cook and grew her own vegetables, so it wasn't hard to get us to eat.

She served a wide variety of foods, and encouraged us to experiment with food. "Have an adventure with food!" was her catchcry. I ate olives, oysters, anchovies and smoked cheese when I was two years old.

She told us we had to at least TRY everything once; as long as we ate one mouthful we could leave it on the plate. After a year or so we would be asked to try it again - sometimes it worked and we had changed our minds.

My mom was the best cook ever. She always had 4 course meals and they were so yummy she did not have to tell me anything I just gubbled it all and asked for seconds!

I miss her cooking so much. She is now going into senile problems and has forgotten how to cook and also doesnt remember she was a great cook.

my times change

But mom I don't wanna eat that.

Oh yeah? Well sit your butt down anyway and eat what I made. I'm not running a 5 star restaurant and passing out menus. There your father is working hard to put food on this table and you whining about it.

But mom, my friend's mom don't make her eat this stuff.

Yeah well your friend's mom isn't your boss, is she now? She isn't raising you, I am. I don't care what the ***** feeds her kids, you belong to me and don't you forget it. And after you eat, wash them dishes.

Reverse psychology...

She'd tell us, "Mom said don't touch the girl (referring to the food)" then pretend (with a broad innocent smile on her face, mind you) that she wasn't looking...turning her head away and humming...then after awhile when we take the food...she'd pretend to be surprised and say "But mom said not to touch the girl!" We always end up giggling.

Dad does it differently. He's patient. then again, he cooks wonderfully so he doesn't have to convince us to eat everything.
