Get something that will hold her attention for a little while. Kids love to learn how to do new things. Age appropriate puzzles are great for kids in that way. They are learning to put things together, and it will keep the mind occupied for a little while. They are very inexpensive, and won't blow your budget. Also, books, water-paint sets, or the old fashioned Etch-A-Sketch are great inexpensive gifts for her age.

My daughter is four and her favorite is dress up clothes, art stuff, Bratz, movies, Mermaidia, clothes/hair things, books, leap pad...

when I make up gifts for children, we have a ton in the family, I like to make up little gift baskets...Very cheap from a dollar store/walmart. Get a small plastic container or basket with/without lid and fill it up. I will usually wrap all the little things up and then place them in the baskets(wrap with tissue paper). The point is when you have small children you have stuff lying all around and an organized gift that comes with a place to keep the gift is nice. :)

I like gifts that keep a kid entertained. Like art materials.

Art Basket: crayons, markers, drawing paper, glue, scissors, stickers, coloring book.

Body and Bath: shampoo, conditioner, body wash, poof, hair brush, hair things, anti bacterial soap, lotion, bubble bath. (my daughter loves when people buy her this stuff)

Dress Up: boa, play dress shoes, dress, play makeup, play jewelry.

You can find all kinds of great things at Dollar General, Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, Big Lots, Walmart.

Good luck!

Here is the link to an awesome website that has gift book suggestions for girls aged four:
http://www.grannysbooks.com/girl4.htm

This site has "hand-picked gifts" from a variety of internet stores, specifically aimed for four year olds:

I think, despite these suggestions, that you will do just fine with some barbies or play makeup and dress-up clothes! These continue to be standards for that age.

my daughter will be turning 3, and she loves dora, blues, and ANYthing to do with singing and dancing... princess and barbie items are usually a hit, no matter... but, the classics like playdoh and crayola are good, cheap, safe ideas as well... and if all else fails, go w/ the cash!!! kids love money, and if she has a piggy bank, it'll prolly be a big deal to add to the lose change she's collected...

get her a magnadoodle. it's this thing that she can write on and erase it after she's done with it. you can get them at target or walmart, they're only $15 I think. my daughter loves it and plays with it all the time. how about a sprinkler?? or a baby doll, barbie. My sister bought my five year old things for her hair this year. we play and do her hair in all kinds of different things.

My Little Pony or Polly Pockets would both go over well.
