This is to save time (not money) - and to have more time to hang out with my friends - there is a long layover at LAX. The more general question is - is it okay to intentionally miss the first leg?

I've already paid for a full multi-city roundtrip. This is to save time (not money) - and to have more time to hang out with my friends in San Diego - because there is a long layover at LAX. The more general question is - is it okay to intentionally miss the first leg?

If you missed the first leg, they normally cancel the second leg. You should always take the flights in sequence as reflected on your ticket. Check with the airline if your ticket is non-reroutable. If it is, maybe you can just have it rerouted.

From your question, I see you've bought a one-way ticket, with a stop in LAX. The airlines usually cancel the return flight if you miss the first flight. Tickets should be used sequently, if they are round trip tickets. In your case, we talk about downgrading, you want to flight a route that surelly cost less than you paid, so in my opinion you should just inform the airline about your intention, they will give you the best solution. It's not something you can't do, that's for sure. They just have to know about it, so they wouldn't cancel your second leg.

No , if you miss the first leg they will cancel the flight. In days of old you could fly from say LGA to LAS connecting in DFW cheaper than flying LGA - DFW. What people would do [ not me of course] is buy the LGA- LAS get off in DFW Take care of business and then fly back to LGA. The airlines got wise to this and started a miss one ,miss all program.

Sorry, no. The airline will also usually cancel the remainder of your itinerary when you no-show for the first segment. The ticket you bought is a contract for all segments.
