A monthly ticket between LAX and SAN (Los Angeles and San Diego) is $518.00. This is a steal compared to the $1280 you'd pay using the full regular fare, assuming $32 each way, 5 days a week, 4 weeks a month (the per-trip cost of the monthly pass works out to $12.95 each way). You can buy the monthly pass for travel beginning in August using the first link below. A ten-trip ticket is also available for $185 ($18.50 per trip) to help bridge the gap if you want to start traveling Monday. Train 562 leaves Los Angeles at 6:05 a.m. and arrives in San Diego at 8:55 a.m., a roughly three-hour trip. Use Amtrak California's Web site for complete timetables (check out the Pacific Surfliner) and to learn about cross-honoring agreements regarding Amtrak tickets and transit passes (e.g. Rail 2 Rail).

Before deciding whether a train commute is right for you, consider what you'd be paying in gas and wear and tear on your car, and also that on Amtrak you can sit back, relax and enjoy the cafe car instead of being stuck behind someone else's bumper. Hope this helps.
