Jesus said there is a better way, and so now what He offers supersedes the "old law".

There is no way that living again by the basically law of the jungle will improve life in ANY society. The last thing this world needs is more of the same destruction from vengeance, or to gain advantage. The planet is sliding into a destruct mode. Why accelerate the pace, when we have NO place else to go???

I a way I do agree with Hamurabi and the first code of laws. It would strike fear into alot of people. However, with some things it would just be too cruel. For instance a death for a death. I disagree with that. Living is a worse for the person, because they have to deal with guilt for the rest of their life. Also bodily harm I disagree with, but other than that I could see it working as long as it is in reason.

A problem would be enforcement and the risk of overthrow from the harshness of these laws.

I myself would like to see how it would work in modern times.

I don't think so, no. "An eye for an eye" is just a fancy way of saying "revenge". It's a holdover from more savage times.
Ever hear what ghandi had to say on the matter? "An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind."

Or, a more common expression: "two wrongs don't make a right."

I don't. If the world existed purely on revenge, it would never stop. Just think about it. If someone cut you off in traffic and you follow that moto, you would have to cut him off back. In the process you would have to cut off other drivers in order to get to the one person who cut you off. They would then have to cut off other driver in order to cut you off. Not to mention that now the driver who cut you off first feels that he has to cut you off again for cutting him off. And not only will that cause thoudsand of travel jam and accidents, you would never get to where you were going. Do you get it?

Well neither do I. An eye for and eye and a tooth for a tooth is a silly way to view the world. It will be a never ending cycle of people cutting people off and never really living. Sometimes it's better just to let things go.

some countries follow this principle (some arab nations do) ... but they aren't any better. to us, it seems unjust... to them, the price for a crime committed should be returned back. but are they any better now? we are not a society of judge, jury and executioner... we rather are a forgiving one. the question then lies... to what extent can we contain our grief if the crime was intended for someone dear to us?

chaos would only reign... we would be no better with such standards. better we seek a punishment more liable for the criminal to whine about and repent, and perhaps die rather than commit the crime as similar to what he did...

Of course it would be great. People would get justice. The only problem is if you were the judge and later found out you were wrong, then you'd have to be punished the same as well.

Well, God did say this to his people through Moses when He gave them the law.

Deuteronomy 4:5 See, I have taught you statutes and rules, as the LORD my God commanded me, that you should do them in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. 6 Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, 'Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.' 7 For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? 8 And what great nation is there, that has statutes and rules so righteous as all this law that I set before you today?
