I'm the same way...but I'm afraid of doing anything to my hair permanantly. So I'll give you this great tip that worked for me.
L'oreal makes this great semi-permanent hair dye...and I WISH that I remembered what it's called....but the box is white, bigger than your typical dye box, and has a black or asian chick's face on the front.
They make two colors: Red, and fuschia. Who ever came up with this stuff is genius because it actually shows up on our dark hair WITHOUT bleaching....and it's not permanent! It lasts about two months...so it'll be gone by the time your roots come in.

Dark pink (almost magenta) looks really wicked with dark brown hair. Both cute and different. Very girly.
