In the United States? It's illegal because we have a very strange concept of freedom when it comes to our own bodies.

We advertise to the world that we are a free country, free to make our own decisions, free to say what we believe, and as long as we aren't trampling anothers rights, free to do what we want to do.

The reason that it's illegal is that the government has a lot of money to spend on making it illegal. They have the ability to frighten the masses into thinking that it's bad and that horrible things will happen to you if you get high.

We allow fatty foods (obesity is closing in on the number one cause of death in the United States, and it's one of, if not the biggest costs in the health care industry).

We allow alcohol (remember what happened when we tried to get rid of that) and it not only causes deaths due to liver disease and the like, but it causes deaths in drunk driving and drunken stunts as well as deaths and chaos in drunken brawls and family fights.

We allow prescription drugs so that impotent men can become erect, so that people will have more sexual desire, so that we can eat a lot and not get heartburn.

We allow chemicals that will alter your appearance (botox and the like).

There are so many things that we allow when we know that they are bad for people or just plain silly, and yet a natural substance that grows easily in the wild and provides a euphoric state of being, that's not allowed.

We have at least one living example of a society that allows marijuana freely and you know what, they have one of the highest standards of living in the entire world. A very low crime rate, and a great number of highly educated citizens.

Sorry for the rant, this just bugs me.

Love as always,

Sebastian

Because it's an intoxicating substance. In the encyclopedia/dictionary, it's referred to as a stimulant. But that has changed. Some call it a hulucogen now because it's gotten so strong (the dank stuff) since the 60's. Alcohol is also an intoxicating substance, but remember alcohol was once illegal in the United States. You can kill someone under the influence of pot while driving a car or alcohol for that matter. On the other hand, you can kill someone while driving a car while sober. As you probably know, there are a lot of people that think that if pot was legal in the US, we would have a lot less drug-related problems. It may not be physically addictive like alcohol, but it can be mentally addictive (personal experience). I think it's illegal just because it impairs your judgement, just like alcohol. That's why you get fired when you go to work drunk.

OK, this isn't really an answer, it's more a question for some of the respondents; How did your friends get "messed up" by using pot ? It's been quite a while since I hung out with any serious users, but the guys I knew in high school who just did pot were generally in better shape than the guys who chugged a lot of beer. Last I heard, not many of them had died of cancer, and that's just as likely because they smoked a lot more tobacco.

On the other hand, I work with a couple of people who HAVE seriously messed up their ability to do their job by overuse of alcohol. The one guy can't even do basic troubleshooting on his own anymore.

Given that they finally gave up on prohibition of alcohol, I really don't know why pot is still illegal, except for the theories that the big companies that support tobacco and booze want it that way. And I don't really like THAT answer either, because conspiracy theories like that are usually just hogwash. But I haven't been able to come up with anything better.

You pose an excellent question. It does not cause cancer, nor emphyzema, nor is it bad to smoke while pregnant, nor does it kill brain cells.

It puts tar on your lungs just like cigarettes. Yes, it makes you high. No, it is not smart to be high while operating a motor vehicle. LIKEWISE, it IS NOT smart to drink while operating a motor vehicle. A VERY large percentage of accidents where the driver has pot in their system ALSO has alcohol in their system.

Another positive of smoking pot rather than drinking alcohol is that being are too laid back to beat each other up. Alcohol has a tendancy to turn even the most kind person into a violent person. Pot can turn even the most violent person into a laidback person.

I was 100% anti-marijuana until I tried it. I love it. If America would legalize pot, our economy could prosper, and use of hard drugs would diminish.

IT'S THE 21ST CENTURY, ISN'T IT TIME TO LEGALIZE A PLANT?

It's a complicated and very misleading political issue.

The propaganda machine will tell you it's because pot is a dangerous substance that puts you and others at risk while you are high on it. They will tell you it makes you crazy, that it messes with your sperm, and causes babies to have severe deformities.

What they won't mention is how making marijuana illegal saved the paper industry. How it fuels criminal and terrorist organizations. They won't mention how the CIA was importing heroin in body bags during Vietnam (Which by the way is a proven fact, It's been published and is actually verifiable.)

They won't tell you that drug use has only gone up since the war on drugs.

They won't tell you about the millions of dollars the government reaps from this "war on drugs."

they won't mention the countless billions of dollars, rights, and lives this war on drugs has costed American citizens.

Why is Marijuana illegal? Because enough rich and powerful people got together and realized that by starting a war on drugs would make them more wealthy and more powerful.

People who agree with the war on drugs are quite simply ignorant. Drugs don't force people to do crazy things. Drugs don't force people to use them. Drugs don't even cause death 99% of the time.

Think of it this way, if drugs were really as dangerous as the media portrays them, people would NOT use them. I mean, I don't see people walking around drinking anti-freeze to get high.

Seriously, if you don't like drugs, Good for you. If you don't want your friends and family using drugs, your a normal citizen. But to blatantly say that they are wrong, immoral or even worth of being illegal you are simply blind to the fact that this war on drugs has costed more in terms of money, life and liberty than any government action.

With the possible exception of this new "War on terrorism."

It's messed up enough people that I know, that I hope it stays illegal...and if it comes to a vote, I'll vote that it STAY illegal.

Messed up: they sit around and smoke pot all day, then come asking for money when they don't have any. That MIGHT be ok for dimwitted teenagers...but these folks have been tokin' SINCE they were teenagers. Now they're in their fifties and sixties. Oh, and the rest of the world is to blame for their problems, of course.

Teen friend who smokes...along with her whole family...has a lot of dreams and goals and plans, but...well, it's hard for her to concentrate on stuff like books and education, so....well...she thinks she'll just stay home...and keep tokin.....

That's what I mean by messed up.

because many people become severly impaired after using it... much worse than the effects of alcohol. Not every one responds the same way to this drug and this particular drug shows signs of brain degeneration as well as slowing down of certain area functions that the brain controls. Chronic use of week just like alcohol but maybe more potent can cause even delusional thinking... sit pot has it's reasons for being illegal

if you were sick and had to go to the hospital would you want someone who has an impaired brain function to work on you? How about if you're in a car, and another driver just smoked pot and does not get out of the way on time because of the slow reaction to a particular situation? Or maybe it's ok to loose brain cells, which by the way do not regenerate, and not remember sh*t?

because the government can't figure out how to tax it without losing out on most of the sales. They can't tax right now, and if they did make it legal and tax; most of the sales, or at least a large portion, would be sold on the black market like now. this would be for people to avoid taxes.

Of course the next reason would be politics, really think that the politician that voted for pot to be legal would be elected to office next term? hell no because a majority of the liberals that would like pot to be legal do not vote.

there is my opinon...

Because the government hasn't figured out a way to tax people for it since it is so easily grown at home you don't need big manufacturers like cigarette companies do..........its all about the money they don't give a sh*t if people smoke weed, they just want their cash cut.........and to the retard 2 posts above, no way in this world does it impair you worse then alcohol, get an education about something before just trying to get 2 points
