We have a 16 month old daughter and live in an apartment. We really want to get a dog for our daughter to play with, and also companionship for me when my husband works nights. Ideally, we want a short-haired, small to medium dog, non-yappy or hyper, and great with kids. Is there a breed out there that would be appropriate? We live in an area where the dog could go outside a lot when supervised and our daughter loves animals so much. We just dont know if there is a breed that would suit our needs. A cat is out of the question since I am allergic, and no birds, rodents or reptiles. Any advice from a knowledgable person is appreciated! Thanks!

The Boston terrier would fit your needs perfectly. They are great with kids, kind and forgiving, remain cute and clownish all their lives, and are quiet.

Just don't feed kibble with corn or soy.

o god yes!!! Believe it or not....adopt a greyhound lol. theyre about as gentle and quiet and lazy as it gets. Also ex racers often go through foster care and are cat friendly. Also they do lack hair....maybe a brushing once a week is all thats needed.
If thats too big then I would say a whippet or poodle.
Whippets are basically smaller greyhounds. thats the only difference. But like with greyhounds they need a winter coat that you must buy or they will freeze. Also they must have dog beds I believe.
Poodles - mini poodle. Not the toy. Smaller dogs tend to be less tolorant of pulling of the ears and stuff.
Bichon - Another curly haired breed...like a poodle but not lol
APBT/Staffie/staffie bull - basically what us common people know as a pit bull. Love kiddies but I would adopt one or get one from an AKC breeder to insure its behavior is ok
Adopting is always better. Most shelters check to see if dogs are baby friendly. Also its cheaper so you can spend more money on your baby : ). At shelters you may find a mutt that is basically hypoallergenic and fits your needs better than any purebred.
GOOD LUCK!!!

For a great list with pictures to choose from, go to WWW.AKC.COM and go to Breeds and look at the Terriers Group. For specifics, A border terrier, irish terrier, schnauzer, and welsh terrier are great dogs and great with familys. Some by nature are a little more alert than others but all are GREAT family dogs and very protective of young children. If you are willing to deal with some hair, try the Scottish Terrier or "Scotties". Granted, they have longer hair but honestly, shed very little and you only have to comb them once a day or every other day.

There are so many breeds to choose from - Boston Terriers, poodles, bichons basset hounds. Why not look to adopt a dog through petfinder.com. Often on this site you can find a dog that is in a foster home and you can find out a lot of information on him/her that you would not otherwise know.

it relatively is large which you're waiting for a canine. you are going to locate it irresistible! I basically could say that possibly you may think of approximately getting a canine from a solid breeder who tests for the frequently used issues like eyes, coronary heart, knees, hips via fact considering this could be a canine you certainly need have arranged for, you do no longer choose a sickly canine with a foul history. remember shield and rescue canine are in many circumstances canine from puppy shops so which you would be in for some heartbreak down the line besides as severe medical costs. i understand. I have been given a canine from a rescue that has all forms of subject concerns and could smash the bank plus it ought to no longer make it. next time i'm getting a wholesome canine from a breeder.

I am for the Shih Tzu breed, They are excellent with children of all ages.
They do not shed, are non-allergenic and all they want is love.
We have a Foundation and are in the process of training them to be therapy dogs.
View my 360 page.
(you can also cut their hair short)

I have a Australia Shepard mixed with collie. We got him when he was a puppy, my daughter was about 16 months old. He is SO good with her. She pulls his ears and trys to ride him like a horse. He does nothing but lick her. She loves her doggy.

Look into a cocker spaniel. The local SPCA can give you some
great tips. They also screen their dogs to make sure they aren't
vicious.

GO TO THE ANIMAL SHELTER AND FIND A GENTLE DOG, AND SEE IF YOUR DAUGHTER IS SAFE WITH IT.MOST DOGS THERE HAVE ALREADY BEEN FIXED AND HAD MOST OF THEIR SHOTS. THE SHELTER WILL TELL WHAT ELSE YOU WILL NEED.
