People in positions of power created heaven and hell as a carrot and a stick to control the masses.

People created Heaven and Hell, because they had nothing better to do while high.

God created both and the earth. Hell was only meant for Satan and his demons but because people turn away from God (who is perfect and can accept no less than perfection into His Kingdom), people can end up there. If peopel made it up, then thats fine too because that means I can't change that. but if it really does exist, I can stay out of hell! (if you want to stay out also, I can help you understand how to do that. email me!) This whole arguement about God exisiting and heaven and hell existing is soooo pointless... so what if it doesnt exist? If I live my life under false pretenses of faith and expectation and kindness and love, will that make me more or less harmful to society as a whole? BUT if I live my life like there is no accountability for my actions because there is no God and it turns out I was wrong....oooh I dont want to know. I'll go with Plan A, thank you!

And yet since people created God, it stands to reason that people created heaven...isn't logic wonderful?
Seriously, religion (in all of its forms) was created to explain what people couldn't, and to establish rules and laws for society. The idea of heaven, hell, and any form of afterlife, was meant to quell the fear of the unknown. It also stands as a reward and punishment system.

I think it could be a reflection of peoples' own desires. They want heaven for themselves and hell for their enemies. A nicer person wouldn't have created an eternal hell.

Maybe to control us people??? but honestly i don't know...and friends and family that have died....have not come back to tell us if, a BIG IF there's a heaven...But i do know hell is on earth because of all the crap we have to go through!!

Hell doesn't exist--yet. And that will be created (by the Ruler of the Universe--for the devil and his angels.

As a means to scare people into joining their religion, "You'll burn if you don't". People are too scared of what happens after death to not try to help themselves, it's also convenient for the church. I think if a religion uses scare tactics as a method to recruit members then it's not the right one.
I grew up in a crazy christian church and I still believe in alot of things that I know I shouldn't, I'm probably brainwashed! I lean towards buddhism these days, it makes a hell of alot more sense.
