hey I just gave you a best answer.
surely you can't mean 40 actual % .I'm sure some fell out but if it were 40 you'd look like gollum.
alopecia is predominantly male but it does happen to women. it is a slow progressive fallout process though not like waking up with half your hair on the pillow.
I would suggest going to a doctor rather than one of us armchair dr.s. there you can find real answers and possible propecia prescription.
word to the wise, don't spend a dime on anything you hear on the radio etc. its ALL a rip off. rogaine doesn't really work, if it does your lucky to have peach fuzz....on the back of your head because thats the only place it is directed to use( always pisses me off when I see those commercials and the dude is in front of the mirror combing the front of the hairline alluding that it works there, read the side of the box it says it won't work)anyways enough ranting, all those packages are the same rogaine based thing costing hundreds of dollars every couple months.
I've got a laser comb ,it seems to work no new growth but fallout has slowed/stopped.
in the meantime buy some topik ,its great for concealing
the good news is that its always easier to keep what you got than grow some new

I believe there are medications for this problem, so consult your doctor. You can also get regular scalp treatments, I would say at least once a week. The scalp treatments will help stimulate the scalp. What they do is apply a special conditioner to the scalp then set you under the dryer(or heat lamp) for a few minutes & then while the scalp is nice & warm they massage it(trust me it feels sooo good). You may want to go to a beauty school to have them done(some salons might be a bit pricey & you wont have to worry about your hair being messed up because there wont be any cutting or chemical service being preformed)
You may also want to be sure to take a multivitamin daily & try to eat healthy. If your body is healthy it may help with getting the hair to start growing back.
I hope this helps, if your hair keeps getting worse you may want to look in to hair peices untill it gets better, I wish you the best of luck

This doesn't seem like a mild case. Losing over 40% of my hair would be a serious problem. Here is a good website relating to hair loss:

I'm assuming you've seen a doctor about this. I wish I could answer your question...I'd say the best thing to do now is just wait it out. If you're uncomfortable with it try contacting Locks of Love (not sure if they just work with cancer patients). Try looking up info. from www.webmd.com. They may be able to give some kind of idea. Good luck.

go to the dermatologist, he can perscribe special shampoos for that and you have to treat alopecia with the help of a specialist. And try not to color or perm your hair during the treatment.

Usually, that's too long for me. I believe it depends on the guy and his face though. Certain guys can pull off long hair and other folks can't.
