What are the qualifications for one to become a godparent? My aunt is having her second child and I was wondering if a teenager could possibly be a godparent. I am up as one of the godmothers to this baby and we were both just wondering.

I am a godfather. In my opinion it means to always support and be willing to step in and help with the child. If the Parents were to die I would help in any way I could to make sure he has what he needs to start a life of his own.I take this to mean help making sure he is in a good home(his Godmother which is an Aunt ,and I am a friend so he would live with her).If anyone ever tried to take him from her I would raise hell, using my Lawyer.I would make sure he was brought up in the Lutheran church, this was a promise I made at the cerimony in front of the priest.Generaly making sure he has someone to come to if his parents are gone. All the little things that matter, school problems girls, college, first car, advice anything he may need help with in life. You are the person in his or her corner when the parents have died before their time. This is what I took it all to mean.as long as they are alive I am just that uncle that shows up with presents on holidays, and is there for all the good times and bad.The fun guy that never has to punish LOL.I hope this helped.

years ago a Godparent was someone that you would leave your child with if anything happened to The parents. Now it is more of a symbolism thing. You need to "qualify" in the parents eyes. Which I would imagine would be that you are close to them, would be a good role model and you are someone who has a strong faith. Just don't forget the little ones B-day!! That is an honor that you are even thought of that way being only 14!! Great job on being a good person of Faith!

A Godparent must be of the same religion, and agree to take the responsibility of spiritual guidance for the child, should the parents be unable to do so. Being a teenager doesn't matter. My teenage brother was my child's Godfather!

Typically today the Godparent takes over the raising of a child who has been orphaned - and/or - one who raises the child in spiritual matters as well.., typically like a second parent I suppose.

Also usually there is a God father and a God mother - not usually a single person. But hey, I guess its flexible.

The Catholic church requires that a godparent be over 16 and be confirmed. I am not sure about other religions. I suppose it depends on the priest/minister. Being a godparent is a serious responsiblity - how wonderful that your aunt believes in you so.

Some people are godparents without being Catholic or even religious.

I was raised in a Christian home, but my husband does not believe in God, and our children's godmother was raised a Buddhist. The main thing for us is that we know our children's godmother will take our kids and raise them as her own should the worst happen to us, and they be left without their parents. Until that day (which hopefully will never come) she gets to be a good influence, and love them even more because of the special commitment she has made to them, that they are not even aware of.

then I don't think you are too young. she may have others in mind, but don't take offence, but as a godparent you should be the childs religious life and love, but even if you don't become godmother, then you can still help!
