Blu-ray is a new High Definition (HD) video disc format. The discs are the same size as DVDs and CDs but they pack in a whopping 50GB of video, music, or data vs 9GB or 0.7GB for DVD and CD. A key technology that makes this possible is new blue light laser diodes (hence the name Blu-ray) rather than the red light laser diodes used by DVD and CD.

This means that they can display beautiful HD movies that are even higher resolution (1920 x 1080p) than most HD TVs on the market today. Howevery, a Blu-ray HD disc player will even work with plain old NTSC (480i) non-HD, non-digital television.

Blu-ray promises a big upgrade to DVDs fulfilling the promise of HD home theater.

There is another standard backed by other manufacturers called HD-DVD as well that has similar properties but lower storage capabilities than Blu-ray today.

basically, a disc that holds more than 5 times more than a dvd. it has a tough protective layer so no matter how much u scratch it, the data will be fine. instead of using a normal red laser to read it, a blu-ray player uses a blue laser.

It is one format for putting High Definition TV on a disk. Sony created it and is trying to make it THE FORMAT; I hope they succeed every bit as well as they did with Betamax videotape.
