When I worked outside the home, hugging was one of the things I had to do as a part of my job, I worked with troubled teenaged boys - I didn't get in trouble for it - but sometimes they did if they were in appropriate in how they hugged me! - and when I worked in other office environments, I never considered it out of place to offer a hug to someone in need and was never called down for having done so - and had I been - I may have just reached up and hugged the one who called me down - and said - doesn't that make you feel better too?

I do hug and get hugs at work, but only with the folks that I know will not feel uncomfortable or offended, it is a fine line between comforting someone and sexual harassment.
