Think of it this way; they are cooped up in the house with nothing to do. So being on semi-friendly terms of not really understanding who the other one is about they are providing their own entertainment. They think of each other like "You are weird, like really, really weird. But on the other hand, you're OK. Let's play". They are probably going to be good friends when it's all said and done. When I had to put the dog down, the cat went through the house crying plaintively for weeks.
