I have to cross the Rockies with a u-haul and I have high blood pressure, I asked and got mixed replies from doctors. Has anyone done high altitude driving with high blood pressure? I do take medication. Any suggestions to a safe route from Sacramento to Kansas City for both me and the u-haul?

All routes will be hot this time of year. I recommend that you look to see where the wild fires and forest fires are burning right now, and use that as a reverse guide for which route to take.

High blood pressure shouldn't bother you much since you're on medication and you're just passing through the Rockies. If you're used to a low altitude, then the pass near Laramie, Wyoming will be the highest you're apt to get, so long as you avoid the Jackson WY route. Going through Laramie often causes altitude sickness, and it manifests itself in different ways for different people. Some get a backache that just won't go away, or the feeling like you have pneumonia - that ache in your lungs. It goes away once you get over the mountains.

I've made the trip several times, with U-Hauls and without. They're pretty safe nowadays and the trip is really no big deal if you stay on the interstates. It's a shame to make a trip like that and not see the great scenery along the way, but you won't see that stuff from the interstates, especially in Wyoming.

Good luck, and email me if you have any questions. I've done this lots of times, and settled in the place you probably dread the most.

You will not be travel ling very fast in a U-haul either driving one or towing one. You Will be ok. Just plan your trip as if you did not have high blood pressure. If you are a member of a travel club such as AAA ask them to plan your route for you. Or you can do it your self. There is beautiful scenery along whichever route you take. Enjoy your trip!
