If it depends on the state on lives in, I am looking for information regarding the state of California.

That question is too broad to have one answer. It depends on federal, state and local laws. Some corrections officer act in the capacity of sheriff's i.e. court appereances. If you are a law enforcement officer who you work for and what services you provide probabbly corralate with being able to carry a gun. Departments have there own set of rules and regulations about firearms.

The Peoples Republic of California does not require law enforcement officers (certified) to carry a firearm off duty. Since it is illegal in California to have a gun only criminals have guns. You would be an idiot to go out in public in a uniform without a gun in such a place.

Peace Officers - yes, sheriff officers - yes, corrections officers - no. It happens to be a felony crime to bring a firearm into a jail, officer or not. if you ever get arrested, you'll notice the arresting officers securing his handgun in a safe before entering the jail.
